Nisyros Volcano
The volcano on the island of Nisyros is the youngest one in Greece. It is an active volcano as are the ones at Methana, on Milos Island and on Santorini Island. Most of Nisyros is mountainous, volcanic and very fertile. The island is composed of volcanic rock formations that were formed by previous volcanic activity. The various rock formations (e.g. basalt) have been used as construction material in various buildings such as the Palaiokastro and the bell tower of the Church of Agios Ioannis Theologos located near Nikia. The island has been formed by lava. The rocks are covered by pyroclastic deposits and volcanic mud. Two possible eruptions occurred several millennia ago, estimated around 25,000 years back. The largest crater of the volcano, named Polivotis, has a diameter of 260m and 30m depth. There are another 5 younger craters in the region, the largest of which is Stefanos with a diameter of 30m and a 30m depth. The valley that surrounds the volcano is 2,400m long and 950m wide.

Lovely day out; Nisyros is a friendly island. The main town has narrow winding streets that you will share with a variety of motorised vehicles as you meander up to the monastery at the top of the hill so keep an ear out. There are a few steep steps up to the top but they are manageable and it is worth the effort. The guides recommended lunch spot was good, and reasonable enough but there are many decent refreshment spots at hand so have a wander. The trip to the volcano by coach involves a steep ascent and descent into the caldera but it is worth the trip and if you don't like heights sit in the left of the coach. The volcano is easily accessible and very pretty, there's loos and a cafe as well. The boat trips were very pleasant, sit on the outside near the bow and watch the spray turn to rainbows on the way home.

Nice getaway, walking over a volcano. Slight chaos on arrival and departure in Nisyron. Not smart to inform 3 groups at the same time in the same place. Had a nice lunch on a shady, idyllic market square. Photogenic trip. Put on sturdy shoes.

The guide was only with us for 20 minutes. Couldn't understand anything she said. She also recommended a place for lunch which we went to, Vegos. The food was terrible, by far the worst meal we have had. The volcano was great to see.

Booked this last minute and glad we did. The boat wasn’t as advertised and was a ferry instead but we quite enjoyed this glimpse into local life. Walking in the volcano crater was a great experience and the village of Mandraki is beautiful. Barbara the guide walked us through the village and we had a chance to try some free samples of goods we could buy. She also took us to a taverna and we had lunch there (not included in price). It was a lovely spot and the food was excellent. Had plenty of free time to explore the village and the gift shops. Transfers from coach to boat and back to coach were a bit chaotic but it all worked out ok! Overall, good value for money.
