Nisyros Volcano
The volcano on the island of Nisyros is the youngest one in Greece. It is an active volcano as are the ones at Methana, on Milos Island and on Santorini Island. Most of Nisyros is mountainous, volcanic and very fertile. The island is composed of volcanic rock formations that were formed by previous volcanic activity. The various rock formations (e.g. basalt) have been used as construction material in various buildings such as the Palaiokastro and the bell tower of the Church of Agios Ioannis Theologos located near Nikia. The island has been formed by lava. The rocks are covered by pyroclastic deposits and volcanic mud. Two possible eruptions occurred several millennia ago, estimated around 25,000 years back. The largest crater of the volcano, named Polivotis, has a diameter of 260m and 30m depth. There are another 5 younger craters in the region, the largest of which is Stefanos with a diameter of 30m and a 30m depth. The valley that surrounds the volcano is 2,400m long and 950m wide.

All round great trip. Picked up on time and taken to the boat, which wasn’t too busy and plenty of space to sit down. Our guide, Martha, was great - really knowledgeable and made the day really interesting. Plenty of time at the volcano and in the town and the recommended restaurant for lunch was lovely - the gyros and souvlaki were amazing. Last trip of the season so we were treated to fireworks and flares as we left the harbour to come back!!

We all really enjoyed the trip, the day went as planned, very well organised. The volcano was interesting and much bigger than anticipated. Just the right amount of time needed to walk down to it and back again. Mandraki was quaint and charming, a little more time there would have been lovely. We would recommend the trip.

A really great experience, the whole day was excellent! The pick ups and transfers to the ferry and back were well organised but you need to be paying attention to the guides so you don't get mixed up like a few people did. The boat crossing was fine, really dramatic views of Giali as you pass it. Nisyros is beautiful, Mandraki is very tranquil and fun to explore with lots of little twists and turns to get lost down and really enjoy seeing the town. The volcanic crater was stunning if you're into natural beauty or geology but be aware the sulphur smell is quite strong, and the crater floor is hot so it's not suitable for flip flops or sandals, wear proper shoes! The main visiting area of the caldera is semi-paved and accessible to wheelchairs or pushchairs but the descent to Stefanos crater is not. Marta was our guide and was very knowledgeable about the island, she was very friendly and approachable and went out of her to way to make sure the group was having a good time. The restaurant in Mandraki she recommended was excellent and very fair value, with options to try native Nisyros dishes. We had our two year old with us (the youngest of the group) and she was very interactive with him, made sure we had what we needed so we had the best possible time, and we really did! Thank you, we will definitely use Aegeas Travel again when we're back in this part of the world.

A wonderful day out. A great boat ride with Nisyros in sight the whole way and what a pretty island it is. Walking on the Stefanos crater is certainly an experience and time on the island to wander and find its hidden gems was really enjoyable. Would absolutely recommend this day out.

The whole experience was very well organised but you need to pay attention so you know which bus and boat you are getting - if you're not listening you are causing delays! Nisyros was beautiful, the volcano crater and caldera were very interesting to visit and a very dramatic landscape. Marta (the english-speaking guide) was very friendly and welcoming, had tons of information about the island and went it of her way to make sure everyone was happy, especially our two year old! Genuinely a lovely person who made our trip easier and enjoyable. The restaurant she recommended was excellent and her knowledge of Nisyros was too. The volcanic crater isn't suitable for those who are unsteady or in a wheelchair/pushchair, and if you're seasick then the boat crossing might be difficult for you but we had a brilliant time. Thank you Marta!

Nice trip with good quality / price ratio. You could choose from an English-speaking tour guide or German. We booked the tour online and was super easy and quickly arranged. We were neatly picked up at the hotel and dropped off at the hotel again.

The price-performance ratio is good; hotel pickup, boat trip to the volcanic island, bus trip to the crater and everything back again. The participants are divided into language groups after the boat trip and get their own guide (Katharina did a good job and gave valuable tips). The time in the crater and in the village Mandraki can be divided by yourself. The crater is also suitable for children. For my taste, the time in the crater was a bit tight (just under 1h), if you want to descend and it costs another 5 EUR extra - half an hour more would be ideal. But the time in the village was very generous to see the monastery (costs extra), discover the beach, buy souvenirs and eat something. The buses to the crater unfortunately did not have working air conditioning and the boat to the island did not offer every passenger a seat (two more rows of benches on the empty surface of the upper deck would suffice). All in all, however, the tour was well organized and full of experiences.

It's an hours ferry trip to the island, where you are split on to buses depending on language. Some went into Mandraki for free time, some went straight to the crater then swoped, it was all done very smoothly, and a very interesting day. I didn't go down into Stefano crater, but my husband did, as the walk back was quite strenuous. My husband said it was amazing.
