Juma Mosque
Shamakhi’s greatest landmark is Juma Mosque, one of Azerbaijan’s largest and most lavish places of worship. While the current structure was reconstructed in 2013, the earliest version was built way back in 743AD, making this the second oldest mosque in the Caucasus and the oldest in Azerbaijan. Since then it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, most notably during the devastating earthquake that reduced Shamakhi to rubble in 1859 and later by inter-ethnic clashes in 1918. Besides discovering its historical and religious significance, you can enjoy simply basking in the site’s elegance and tranquility.
Nohur Lake
Nohur Lake is a beautiful natural lake located in the northern part of Azerbaijan, surrounded by a dense forest. It is a popular tourist destination due to its picturesque landscape, which includes crystal-clear waters, verdant forests, and rugged mountains in the distance. The lake is a great place for outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, and camping, and visitors can also enjoy a scenic boat ride or picnic by the water's edge. The area around Nohur Lake is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including rare bird species and endemic plant life, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts. I had an amazing tour with Baku Heritage Tours, especially with our tour guides, Elshad and Rafiga. Elshad is a friendly tour guide who is very well-versed in English. He explains everything clearly and always reminds us about the schedule. He is very patient with all the guests and has a great sense of humor, making it easy to get along with him. Rafiga is a multilingual tour guide. Even though she sometimes explains things quickly, she makes sure that everyone understands what she is saying. She is also very friendly and always ensures that everyone is comfortable. Thank you to Baku, Azerbaijan, for an amazing travel experience. I will definitely visit again soon. Cheers!
