Dunedin’s well-preserved center reflects its unique history as New Zealand’s first city of wealth and influence.
On this self-guided walking tour of Dunedin’s heritage, you’ll discover how a brief but intense period of prosperity during the 1860s Otago Gold Rush transformed this Scottish settlement into a colonial powerhouse. You’ll also see the architectural legacy that endures to this day in its grand Victorian and Edwardian buildings.
The tour starts at the iconic Dunedin Railway Station, famously designed by the architect “Gingerbread George” Troup, in striking Flemish Renaissance style. You’ll make your way through the former commercial heart of the city to explore the Warehouse Precinct, where industrial spaces have been creatively revitalized.

Absolutely loved the Gold Rush Grandeur: A Dunedin Heritage Walk tour! It was a fantastic way to explore the gems of inner Ōtepoti as either a local or tourist. Loved the process of donning headphones and wandering the streets listening to the city's history and its stories. It really makes you focus in on the city's rich history, but also see its sites of significance from a different angle. Makes you appreciate how remarkable New Edinburgh (Dunedin) is, as you wander from site to site, taking in the amazing architecture and rich history as you go. Was very impressed by the quality of the app, and how well it worked offline once the tour was downloaded. Also loved how when you deviated off the tour path you get Sir Ian McKellen's smooth voice asking you to check your map. I went as a solo, but this could totally be done in pairs or larger groups, if everyone has access to the app and tour and has their own devices. Would totally recommend The Southern Compass! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
