Traveled from Vienna to Hallstatt in March 2026 to check out the town. It takes two train rides and a boat ride to get there. Pretty much an all day affair. Note that the boat ride was 8 or 10 euro and they only take cash. They packed everyone on the little boat so it was difficult to find a seat and it was raining. The town of Hallstatt is cute, but there wasn't a lot to do. Many of the shops are closed on Mondays and there were very few sit down restaurants open. I would definitely prefer to go when it had snowed or in the summer and understand it can get very crowded in the summer months.

Memorable experience. The commentator Theodora was excellent. Her commentary made a difference. This trip gives you ample time to relish this magical view.

By the clock, organized and must do. Sophie was the tour guide, well informed and with sense of humour. Excellent coach ride, boat ride and the location itself.

The guide is very knowledgeable and shares plenty of interesting information about the country. The place is magical and we had enough free time as well to do our own thing.

Hallstatt is an extremely beautiful town and we loved exploring it but be forewarned, it takes over four hours to get there so when you consider the round trip travel time, your talking about almost nine hours in a bus to spend barely four hours in Hallstatt. There was also a baby on the bus which did not help! The guide and driver were excellent

If there’s one day trip from Vienna you cannot miss, it’s the full-day adventure to Hallstatt, Austria’s fairytale lakeside village that looks like it was painted by nature herself. The journey starts early from Vienna, winding through the breathtaking Austrian countryside — rolling hills, misty forests, and charming alpine towns along the way. I loved watching the scenery shift from city elegance to mountain serenity. Our guide shared fascinating stories and local legends, making the drive fly by. Arriving in Hallstatt feels like stepping into another world. The village is nestled between the glassy lake and towering Dachstein mountains — every corner is picture-perfect. I took the funicular up to the Skywalk for a panoramic view that honestly took my breath away (and made for some epic photos 😍). Afterward, I wandered through the cobblestone streets, explored the Bone House, and enjoyed lunch by the lake — the trout was so fresh! Don’t skip grabbing a coffee and apple strudel at one of the lakeside cafés; it’s pure bliss watching swans glide across the water. The trip back to Vienna was relaxed, with one last scenic stop at a nearby village for a quick photo op. By the time we returned, I had hundreds of photos and a full heart.

Beautiful lake area and town. Worth the drive and the battle with the crowds. Tour guide needs to have clothes or sign that really stand out. Was easy to get lost from her. Also, people of the tour should be given handout of highlights of areas to see and map of meeting points and times.
