Himeji Castle
Himeji Castle, aka the White Heron Castle for its color, is a Japanese fortified castle. It dates from medieval times and is one of only 12 Japanese castles to have been perfectly preserved. UNESCO has also designated this castle a World Heritage Site. It’s beautiful! And now it is open to our visits.
The west wing is the second part of the visit to the castle. We discover the apartments of the samurai, the maids, then Princess Sen, and their way of life is explained.

Our guide was very friendly, but didn’t speak very much English. He also mostly pointed to signs posted around Himeji castle instead of explaining. I think we would have had about the same experience walking around and reading ourselves.

I would not recommend this private tour. It was offered in English, however, our tour guide could hardly speak English. We asked him questions but he couldn’t explain anything to us, but rather pointed at the plaques for us to read. It was an expensive tour to have a guide who relied heavily on our reading of the plaques. Perhaps he should stick to giving French tours and not pretend that he doesn’t have command of the English language. We were highly disappointed and can NOT recommend this tour.
