Lawrence's Spring

The spring is at the top of a short scramble – head for the fig tree, located just 2km (1.2 miles) south-west of the village of Rum. The spring was named in honour of Lawrence’s evocative description in the Seven Pillars of Wisdom: ‘’In front of us a path, pale with use, zigzagged up the cliff-plinth…From between [the] trees, in hidden crannies of the rock, issued strange cries; the echoes, turned into music, of the voices of the Arabs watering camels at the springs which flowed out three hundred feet above ground’’. Although the pool itself is largely unprepossessing, being a stagnant puddle, the views across the desert are truly spectacular.

Khazali Canyon in Wadi Rum is the site of petroglyphs etched into the cave walls depicting humans and antelopes dating back to the Thamudic times. This narrow canyon contains numerous Nabataean rock carvings of people and animals. Jebel Khazali, a peak situated in the center of Wadi Rum Protected Area opens up in a narrow fissure of about 100 m length. Its inner walls are covered with Thamudic, Nabatean, and Islamic inscriptions, as well petroglyphs depicting humans and animals. Remarkable are the soles of feet petroglyphs, which probably had religious significance. In 1932 the French epigraphist Savignac noted the engravings in the cleft and published some of them in 1934. The petroglyphs and inscriptions of Khazali Siq form an impressive collection being one of the major tourist attractions in Wadi Rum. At the end of the canyon, there are several man-made rock-cut basins for water collection.

  • Good tour

The tour was nice overall, and I am very grateful that the provider met me and even allowed me to take a longer tour instead of the usual half-day tour. It was very friendly and attentive. Important for future guests: The standard Jeep tour takes about four hours in both cases. If you want a longer tour, it is best to book the option with overnight stay, which actually seems cheaper, but takes longer to weigh the overnight stay – simply because there is no need to arrange a return transport on the same day. That was a bit confusing for me at first, so I mention it here. The tour itself was rather quiet and freely designed. We had enough time to look at everything in peace, take photos and enjoy the scenery. The guide was friendly and respectful, and I appreciated the flexibility and relaxed atmosphere.

fantastic experience. Solo travelled and felt really safe. Taxi in to the village in wadi rum, had a good group. Went into the desert and climbed up the rocks and learnt about the bedouin way of living. Beautiful sunset also. Would say - bring water (it was fantastic but we did not get a lot whilst there) and shoes to climb. Bring toilet paper as v few toilets (nature) At the end we spent the evening at the camp and it was lovely. The owner also dropped me back in the village for a taxi as i was not staying the night!

  • Incredible Bedouin Hospitality

We had an amazing time! We booked a jeep tour with an overnight stay in a Bedouin camp at Wadi Rum, and it was beyond anything we could’ve hoped for. The tour is run by a family of brothers who were incredibly friendly and made us feel right at home. They took care of everything and made sure the whole experience was full of fun and good vibes. The desert was absolutely stunning—massive dunes, incredible rock formations, and breathtaking views everywhere you looked. The sunset ride was unforgettable, and the dinner at the camp was delicious. The hospitality was so warm, and the camp was clean and cozy. Sleeping under the stars in the middle of the desert is a memory we’ll treasure forever. Can’t recommend this tour enough!

... but it was impossible. I admit that I booked this activity at the beginning without really knowing what to expect, especially to please my partner. Well, I'm really glad I did! All day long, we saw splendid landscapes in the company of an extremely kind, attentive, funny and generous guide (ask for Rachid, you'll see!), roamed the desert, ate local dishes and had tea with the locals... At the end of the trip, when we couldn't get a taxi back to Aqaba, they took pity on us and brought us back to town (even though it wasn't planned), that's how welcoming they are. I'd highly recommend it to everyone !
