Join this flat walk in the heart of the Ria Formosa Nature Park. You will get to see the labyrinth of channels and marsh vegetation, breathe in the salty sea air, perhaps cross with a Chameleon (Chamaeleo chamaeleon), spot aquatic birds and listen to their distinct sounds, as well as enjoy outstanding landscapes while discovering a complex ecosystem.

What To Expect
Ria Formosa Natural Park
After we have picked you up from your accommodation, we drive to the Ria Formosa Nature Park restricted area of Quinta de Marim, which functions as the headquarters of the Nature Park. Then you get to enjoy a pleasant and easy walk of roughly 6 km passing through several habitats existing in this wetlands system like a pine forest, dunes, Mediterranean shrublands, lagoons, sandbanks and intertidal mudflats. You will be amazed by the outstanding views and landscapes of the lagoons, islands and intricated channels. In this half day walk you will discover many native flowers and plants of this region, and experience some of its fragrancies and tastes. Observe several species of birds, some crustaceous, butterflies and dragonflies. Find out about local mammals and reptiles. You will also have the opportunity to visit the nature exhibitions at the Ria Formosa Nature Park headquarters. Learn how the layers of civilization have always relied on the Ria Formosa as a life support provider.

5.00Our guide, Luis, was phenomenal. He was friendly, organized, and helpful and his knowledge was truly impressive. We focused on environments, birds and plants and saw many, many species. Luis fostered a good vibe among our group of six and helped every one of us see beautiful and interesting birds through his telescope and our binoculars (loan of binoculars included in price). An altogether wonderful few hours. I recommend most highly.

5.00We really enjoyed our excellent tour around the Ria formosa Natural Park last week. Luis picked us up at the arranged time and guided us expertly around, enthusiastically explaining about the landscape and identifying the flora and birds along the way. We used the binoculars he provided to observe the bird life. His passion and commitment to his home environment is obvious. We enjoyed his company and would highly recommend his tours.

5.00Lus was great at communicating before the walk and kindly came and collected us from our apartment. He is a lovely guide and is absolutely passionate about the natural world and especially about the local flora and fauna. At first, we were not able to spot birds that Lus was pointing out (we’ve experienced this before) but our eyes and senses quickly became used to doing so and we were able to see a big range of birds and plants. Lus was incredibly knowledgeable and made the whole time a joy. It was great value for money and we would recommend the walk to anyone.

5.00We had an amazing tour with Luìs this morning. He took us to a beautiful part of the rural area behind Olhão and showed us all we should know about the local ecosystems, the people still living there and the cork. It was amazing to see how much biodiversity a cork forest has and to see the resilience of this tree. An experience that I for sure recommend to any nature lover that wants to discover more about the region, far away from the mass tourism :)

This was an excellent opportunity to experience first hand the natutal beauty of the Ria Formosa Nature Park, and gain an insight of this ecosytem. Beautiful varied scenery and a great opportunity to see close up a wide variety of birds, fauna and flora . A highlight of our stay and highly remommend both the guide and walking experience.
