At Casa de los Angeles, this experience is a personal cultural exchange guided by a native artisan who carries forward traditions learned from his elders. This is not a staged demonstration, but a living practice rooted in community, identity, and ancestral knowledge.

You will learn about natural fibers, cochineal, and plant-based dyes prepared using traditional techniques. Working on a traditional loom, you will experience the rhythm and symbolism woven into each textile while creating your own small piece.

  • Amazing, unforgettable experience with one of the original Zapotec weaving families

I had one of the most memorable and authentic experiences of my trip at Casa de los Angeles in Teotitlán del Valle. This isn’t just a demonstration—it’s a hands-on immersion into the centuries-old Zapotec weaving tradition, guided by a family deeply rooted in its history. The Casa Angeles family is one of the original Zapotec families to open their home to visitors for weaving experiences, and it’s easy to see why they were featured in National Geographic Traveler decades ago. What they’ve created is incredibly special: a full-day journey through every step of making a traditional Zapotec rug. From the very beginning, we were involved in the process—handling raw sheep’s wool, learning how it’s cleaned and prepared, then spinning it into thread. One of the highlights was discovering how they create rich, vibrant colors entirely from natural sources: plants, insects, and locally sourced alkaline and acidic materials that transform the dyes in fascinating ways. Spending the day with José, Juana, and Margarita was a privilege. They were the nicest, most friendly people I met on my trip. José shared deep knowledge about the meanings behind traditional patterns, as well as the broader history of the Oaxaca region and Mesoamerican cultures. Juana prepared an unforgettable homemade meal—tamales and mole based on her grandmother’s recipe—which added such a personal and cultural depth to the day. Getting to sit at a pedal loom and weave my own small piece was something I’ll never forget. It gave me a whole new appreciation for the skill and time that goes into each rug. What truly sets Casa de los Angeles apart is the setting. Unlike larger, more commercial tours, this experience takes place in the family’s home, right in the heart of the town, where local artisans have worked for generations. It feels genuine, personal, and deeply connected to the community. After the experience, I spent time exploring Teotitlán del Valle—walking through the town, visiting the church and weaving museum, and browsing rugs made right there by local artisans. I can’t recommend this experience enough. If you’re choosing between weaving tours in the region, this is the one to do.

  • Great experience, excellent hosts!

The experience was absolutely perfect, very detailed and thorough. The admission fee was very reasonable for the length of the visit. The homemade lunch was delicious! The atmosphere was inviting and set up in a way that was very comfortable. I loved learning about the natural dyes and what makes the variation in colors. My favorite part was weaving on the loom, this on its own will bring me back again and again. I was able to weave a cute little mat that I love. Would be great if they one day offered open workshop hours to weave a big rug of my own. I would love that!

We had an absolutely wonderful experience with this workshop and can recommend it highly. From the very beginning, we felt warmly welcomed by the family, who were incredibly kind, friendly, and genuinely passionate about sharing their craft and culture. The entire process was fascinating and hands-on. Working with natural wool and fibers, and learning about traditional dyes like cochineal and indigo, gave us a deep appreciation for the artistry involved. The guidance from the Zapotec artisan was excellent—clear, patient, and inspiring—making it easy and enjoyable to follow along, even as beginners. The weaving itself was so much fun, and being able to use traditional looms and tools made the experience feel truly authentic. On top of that, the homemade meal prepared with fresh, local ingredients was absolutely delicious and added such a special, personal touch to the day. The small group setting made everything feel relaxed and personal, allowing us to ask questions and really connect with the hosts. This was more than just a workshop—it was a meaningful cultural experience that we will remember for a long time. Highly recommended!

This was an outstanding day spent with Mizael and his family. We learned about the full dying and weaving process from sheep to rug. And this was a hands on experience. We did a little of each step ourselves including spinning, choosing dyes, grinding cochineal, and more. There was even a little magical chemistry experiment performed in our palms. During the last part of the day we each wove a little mat to take home and it was the real deal. And let me not forget to mention that Juana served us homemade breakfast and lunch. This whole experience was heartwarming and beautiful.

Misael is Great. As he continues his father's legacy, it is obvious how much this tradition means to him. He goes through every step of the process with extreme knowledge and answered the hundreds of questions that I asked. Each process was very interesting-probably the most interesting is the dyeing process using the natural dyes. His father's weaving patterns are there and it's inspirational to think about how the patterned pieces are designed. Misael explained everything completely before we moved to the next step. It is very hands on and the day is over before you might be ready. I did a small weaving on a very large loom and keeping your hands & feet where they belong as you weave is something of a trick. Misael is VERY patient! A delicious lunch was prepared by Misael's wife and his children are adorable. Mama is also there and is beautiful!

I spent an amazing day at Casa de los Angeles with Mizael and his family in their lovely home studio. I learnt the history of Oaxaca and the process of turning sheep's wool to yarn, dyed it into my favorite colors and spent a couple hours on the loom weaving a small piece and chatting about Zapotec symbols and textile patterns. Mizael's beautiful wife Juana prepared a delicious lunch and taught me how to make a tortilla. I bought a gorgeous woven bag from their workshop as a souvenir. I would highly recommend this experience

I purchased this weaving workshop as a birthday gift for my sister and I and I can't think of any more worthwhile experience while in Oaxaca. The entire booking, pickup and workshop were perfectly managed, and it was so much more than we expected. Misael and his wife Juana welcomed us into their home with a traditional chocolate drink with bread and home made bean and cheese tamales flavoured with avocado leaves. As we finished our drink, Masael explained the cultural and linguistic complexities of Oaxaca State. As a fourth generation artisan, he is steeped in the artistry of cleaning, carding, spinning and dyeing sheeps wool with natural products learned over time and explains the various steps with confidence and ease in the English language. It was such a pleasure to participate in the process and our appreciation of the art increased with each step. This family has earned international recognition for their skills and commitment to environmentally natural and sustainable practices. You will leave with a deep appreciation and respect for Mexican traditional artisans and with a souvenir article you personally created on a loom. It is without a doubt the most excellent workshop I've ever participated in. Thank you Misael and Juana for an unforgettable day!

It was an amazing class. The hospitality was next level, it felt like we were apart of this family as they taught us their traditions. we began with a brief history lesson of the family and art, then dove into spinning yarn, dyeing it, and weaving it. It was an immersive experience like none other, I couldn’t recommend this enough.
