The only saving grace of our tour was our guide, Mel. He was very attentive and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, two days before our tour, a person from Aloha Sunshine Tours informed me that the vehicle they were going to be using can accommodate only 15 people, including the driver. We had exactly 15 people in our party, so Aloha Sunshine Tours said that one or two people from our party will have to go in another van. However, the person from the tour operator also said that the vans will be a “convoy” (her exact word), and we will still be together at the different places we’re visiting. This did not happen. Mel came first and my husband and I got on this van. The van that was supposed to take the rest of my family came 10 minutes after we left. Their driver missed the first sightseeing stop and had to turn around. Then he didn’t know where to go next and asked my sister to google the location for him!!! I had to contact the tour operator and asked them to get him up to speed. Needless to say, my husband and I didn’t get to spend the tour with my family. They had a terrible experience because they had to guide their tour guide, and my husband and I just felt like we missed out on what was supposed to be a family activity. I feel especially awful for signing up my family for this tour and having them spend the money on a sub-par experience. I hope others never experience what we went through.

The entire tour experience was absolutely worth it! Brandon, our tour guide, was knowledgeable and a genuinely amazing person. From pick-up to drop-off, everything was well organized and enjoyable. The only downside was lunch at Punaluʻu — it was unfortunately quite disappointing and honestly inedible. That said, their baked goods were delicious and reasonably priced, though it seems full meals aren’t their strong suit. Viator is the best app for booking & cancellation, Viators & Tour customer service over the phone is excellent, they guide you through it. Thank you for whoever talked over the phone.

Nice guide but did not speak much. He drove us to our destinations. He told us where to go and what time we should be back. Our guide did not know the history of the places we were seeing. This tour company should train their guides more about the locations they are driving tourists to and personal skills like offering to take photos.

Such a fun day and our tour guide was awesome! The pick up was running about an hour and a half late, but it ended up being a wonderful day and he made up for it and more ways than one. It was on Christmas Day and he managed to find a place for us to get some food for lunch as well.

Brandon is energetics, knowledgeable and fun. All you’d want in a tour guide. I highly recommend this tour, you get to see more and drive less than if you were to do it by yourself.

Our tour guide Mel is a wealth of knowledge and gave a lot of information while making the long journey to Kilauea seem shorter and very mindful of bathroom breaks.

Mel is the best guide of all my Hawaii tours! He’s so knowledgeable and shared tons of fun facts, not only about volcanoes and also life in Hawaii. As a scientist, I do love the way he conveys stories behind the observations. Thanks to the trip, I got to know such a beautiful and relaxing place. Hope I can revisit the big island with my families and see the eruptions next time!
