Get the chance to visit the site of Herculaneum being guided by an Archaeologist.
Get to know more about this ancient Roman city, inhabited by merchants and nobility, whose life ended dramatically fast in 79 AD. The guide will show you the waterfront where more than 300 remains of people trying to escape by sea were found, but also the Samnite house, the thermal baths, the Temple of the Augustales, the forum, the house of Neptune and Amphitrite, the Gymnasium, the house of the wooden partition and much more.
You will get an intense experience: you can see not only stone, marble and ceramics left, but also carbonized wood and even more exquisite paintings and mosaics than in Pompei.
Herculaneum was destroyed by a much more powerful force which instantly burnt all wood and buried the city under a thick layer which didn’t let the air go through and cause decay.

Luciano was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We would recommend using him and his company. We enjoyed Herculaneum more than Pompeii because of Luciano.

Do not miss this tour! Our archeologist guide Michaele used his own working knowledge of the site plus his ability to weave in engineering and cultural history to create the individual and family stories to give us an amazing experience showing and explaining the fascinating details of life in Herculaneum. Thank you!

Meh guide ran overtime causing us to miss some things including time in the onsite museum. Long winded, would use the audio guide or another tour next time.

Paulo was a wonderful guide! This was my 2nd tour with Viator (1st was Coliseum) and again, I wasn’t disappointed. We had a small group of 6, and Paulo was very informative about the history of Herculaneum. It was really interesting to learn all about the city. We saw 4 or 5 rich houses, a restaurant and the men’s and women’s bath houses. We learned about what archeologists believe life was like when the city was lively, etc. and overall it was a good tour. Paulo is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he does, and it shows. I chose not to see Pompei, and see Herculaneum instead. I’m not sure if it was the best choice or not. I did very much enjoy seeing the original frescos, tiled floors, and artifacts that were still in the city (and museum also included in the ticket fee).

Excellent guide who explained everything so well & was so knowledgeable. Walked at a good pace so we could take everything in. As I wear hearing aids, he regularly ensured that I could hear OK

I am always somewhat reluctant to do "tours" with a "tour guide", but in this instance, I could not have been more wrong. Anna Sorrento, our guide, is an archaeologist by profession, with a PhD, and she is a real expert on Herculaneum. She was, quite frankly, fantastic. The tour was very good value for money, too. I would not bother with so-called "official" guided tours (they may be fine, I guess). Can't recommend Anna highly enough.
