Hike like a local! Explore the beautiful Herzogstand: the favorite mountain of Bavaria's fairytale King Ludwig II. A visit to Munich just wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Alps. Unlike the overly-crowed tours of Zugspitze and Eagle's Nest, this experience is designed for those who want to have a truly authentic Alpine experience. This private, customizable day trip from Munich is also perfect for families and beginners. Meet your guide at Munich's Hauptbahnhof and embark on a short train ride, rich in scenery: magical turquoise lakes, majestic peaks, and the lush Bavarian countryside. Marvel at the shores of Kochelsee and Walchansee before ascending up the Herzogstand. Travellers may hike up following the Bridal Path laid out by King Ludwig II in 1866, or ride up on the cable car, taking in the landscapes in comfort. Enjoy a hearty and traditional lunch on top of the mountain before exploring the trails. Descend the mountain on foot or via cable car before returning to Munich.

I appreciated the flexibility to structure the days hike to suit my capabilities and still have stunning views walking in the mountains. Katrina made sure to get a sense of what I was looking for in the days experience and made it happen! I’m an active person but not extreme, knew I would still be jet lagged and used to breathing at sea level , so wanted to be careful not to over estimate what I could do. I figured I’d be comfortable with 6-9 miles and no more than 1000 feet of vertical rise. Katrina would have put together a more strenuous hike if I wanted but she made this day work out great for me. Because of a rain forecast (Katrina offered the option to cancel, but I wanted to go anyway even if we had rain and she was totally game) we went up by cable car so we could hike up the last 300 feet and get the views before the weather completely socked in, and then we explored the summit trails while the snowflakes flew and the clouds alternated parting and clearing, showing the snow capped alpine peaks and turquoise lakes far below. It was absolutely gorgeous. Some of the higher trails were a little slick-as Katrina had warned they might be with the recent rains- and I was glad to have hiking shoes with rugged soles. I didn’t need my serious hiking boots but sneakers would have been hard to navigate some of the rocky summit trails with. We ate in the summit restaurant (I’m a vegetarian-recommend the spaetzel with caramelized onions) and a classic Bavarian beer-yum! I thought I would want to hike back down to the bottom but ended up being glad for the option to take the cable car back down (fun ride!). This is good for people who want to get out in the mountains and want a hike - from easier to strenuous- tailored to them. Highly recommended! We were so lucky to find this tour! We definitely wanted to visit the Alps while in Munich, but we didn’t know where to start. Our guide, Katrina, planned the perfect day for us. Easy to find meeting point, gorgeous train ride, and breathtaking views from the mountain! We elected to take the cable car, but still enjoyed hiking on top on trails that weren‘t too challenging. Also the lunch was lovely! Get the lentil soup and strudel! Thanks for a beautiful day in the Alps!
