Miyajima
Miyajima (宮島) is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. It is most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views. While officially named Itsukushima, the island is more commonly referred to as Miyajima, Japanese for "shrine island". This is because the island is so closely related to its key shrine, Itsukushima Shrine, in the public's mind. Like the torii gate, the shrine's main buildings are built over water. Miyajima is a romantic place, best enjoyed by staying overnight at one of the island's ryokan. While there are usually many day tourists, in the evening the area becomes much quieter and more peaceful. There are also wild deer on the island that have become accustomed to people. In the day the deer wander around the same sites as the tourists, and in the evening they sleep along the walking paths.
Itsukushima Shrine
The centuries-old Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社, Itsukushima Jinja) on Miyajima is the source of both the island's fame and its name. Formally named Itsukushima, the island is more popularly known as "Miyajima", literally "shrine island" in Japanese, thanks to its star attraction. The shrine is known worldwide for its iconic "floating" torii gate. The shrine and its torii gate are unique for being built over water, seemingly floating in the sea during high tide. The shrine complex consists of multiple buildings, including a prayer hall, the main hall, and a noh theater stage, which are connected by boardwalks and supported by pillars above the sea.

Our tour guide was wonderful. She spoke English very well and shared so much knowledge with us. We learned so much more than if we had traveled to the spots on our own. Well worth the money!

We had a great day with our charming & knowledgeable guide, Emiko. A touching morning in the Hiroshima Peace Park was followed by a sunny afternoon of beautiful shrines and temples on the island of Miyajima.

My wife and I only had one free day in Hiroshima so wanted to book a tour with all the major sites. This tour did not disappoint. Great tour. Our guide Emiko was awesome. She arrived early and was very friendly and knowledgeable. She knew info about each attraction and had insights only locals would know. Awesome job Emiko!

Excellent tour! Very informative and very interesting and to top it off Kyoshi was an excellent guide who lead us to the best lunch spot in Miyajima. The museum at the Shrine was worth the visit.

We were meet by Momoko on arrival at the train station. The weather was a bit unpleasant and we were given a choice about the order off our itinerary which was unexpected but grateful. We chose the island first as the day was predicted to clear as the went on as this involved more shelter. The day didn’t disappoint and nor did Momoko. Her extensive knowledge and dedication to making our experience one to remember right down to lunch and patience with a lost bag. Highly recommend this tour.

Miyuki was the sweetest & kindest tour guide. We enjoyed every minute of our tour with her. Her personal stories about Hiroshima made it even more touching. She’s truly a one of a kind human being. We absolutely loved her. Highly recommend this tour!! She had the day planned out so well. There was enough time to sightsee, take pictures and try some local foods. It’s a tour that can’t be missed!! She became like family by the time we were done w the tour. We didn’t want to leave :(. Definitely pick this tour for your Hiroshima n island experience

First of all, if I could give this tour a 10 star review, I would! When I booked it, I missed the fact that it was a private tour so that was a very happy surprise. Joe was our tour guide and he was really amazing and knowledgeable. He was so patient while I took all my photos and he navigated the crowds of tourists and school children with ease! We saw very beautiful sites and had a fantastic tour. I highly recommend this tour especially with Joe!!
