Atomic Bomb Dome
The A-Bomb Dome, or Genbaku Dome, is one of Hiroshima's most iconic and haunting landmarks, preserved as a stark reminder of the devastating atomic bombing on August 6, 1945. Originally the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, this structure was one of the few buildings near the epicenter to survive the blast, though it was severely damaged. Its skeletal remains have since been carefully maintained as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, symbolizing the resilience of Hiroshima’s people and their commitment to peace. Visitors to the A-Bomb Dome can walk around the structure, observing its preserved state, and reflect on the immense destruction caused by nuclear weapons. It stands as a powerful testament to the horrors of war and a call to action for global nuclear disarmament, offering a profound and sobering experience for all who visit.

John, our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of Hiroshima and took us to a couple of places that I suspect are not on the common tour itinerary. It was good to see these places because they are not the usual tourist attraction. Of course we also visited the Peace Memorial Park and museum. One of the highlights was when John took us to a local restaurant to experience okomiyaki. We enjoyed it very much. Afterwards we rode a ferry to Miyajima to visit the shrine and Tori gate and learned some about the colorful history of Miyajima. Due to the high temperature during our day in Hiroshima, we asked John to hire a private car so we could minimize taking the public transportation and walking to and from the train stations. It worked out very well.

Gander was a brilliant guide and showed us so much. He offered lots of information and was very passionate about everything. The reason I only give 4 stars is that he wasn’t as good with his timekeeping so we ended up having to pay for a taxi to get back to the port in time. If you have no time constraints this is a brilliant trip.

We didn't realise it was a walking tour. It was enjoyable but walked lots of steps. Our guide looked after us very well but I would not recommend it for people with mobility issues
