The market visit was interesting to learn about several ingredients in traditional Hoian dishes. The Coconut Boat tour was fun, and so was the cooking class. As far as how the meal we cooked turned out…it was AWESOME! I’d like to take the credit, but the guide and teacher, Mr. An, deserves the credit.

As advertised, you go to the market and then with some really friendly locals to the coconut boat for a spin. The crab fishing is just for entertainment and not really something that you would use for cooking. The group is small and that works well for the cooking class.

Picked up 45 minutes late. Fooled around on a bamboo boat for 50 minutes had nothing to do with cooking. You don't learn anything special. market tour was useless pointing out what a garlic and onion look like. I learned more walking around the market on my own and asking questions. I expect to have some explanation of the food origin, how the herbs are used, preparation tips. Participants on the courses know the basics and attend because they like to cook and has some level of skill... we can slice onions and julien vegetables. The meal turned out ok and was nice to sit and talk to other travellers. The chef was enthusiastic but did not add value. I could have made the dishes just as well following the recipe in the comfort of my home.

Fun morning cooking. Planned the afternoon/ evening class and was asked if I might like to join the morning so I wasn’t alone. Travel plans moved and turned out I was able to shift the session and glad I did. Small group met at the meeting point for a wonder through the markets. Our guide shared little pockets of information about the markets the different fruits and vegetables as we got to try and / or smell different herbs / coffee/ spices. Our guide also showed us places to eat for the best of local foods. We headed to the coconut boats for a rainy ride but still had fun with our outgoing and funny boat guide. He had a cracking sense of humour! We then headed to the cooking school where we cooked three dishes and a dessert before sitting down to enjoy our feast. This is a fun experience for beginners through those who can cook to enjoy a day learning local cuisine and flavour profiles. Tons of food, so make sure you go hungry 🙂 Highly recommend.
