Canada de la Virgen
The best way to visit the Cañada de la Virgen is with an expert guide. Along the way, we will share our knowledge of cultures of the Bajio region, including the Otomi people and other Mesoamerican cultures. After visiting the Welcome Center, we will walk a total of approximately 3 kilometers (2 miles) together, taking the same path as the ancients. We will show you recent discoveries at the archaeological site and you’ll be able to climb to the top of the pyramid. Along the way, you will see the impressive landscapes as your mind goes on a journey. You will leave with a more thorough knowledge of this wonderful, historical site.

What an adventure! Our guide was very enthusiastic and informative, and climbing to the top of the pyramids was so cool. The tour bus picked us up at the predetermined spot within walking distance of our apartment and drove us to the pyramid museum area where there are bathrooms and small gift shop. From there, we boarded another bus, along with other tour groups, and were transported through private ranch land to a drop off spot one mile from the site. From there we walked the cobblestone or dirt road to the pyramids. Our guide stopped frequently to give us information. Climbing the pyramids was the climax of the tour. Although we had frequent stops to view points of interest and hear information, the tour moved along and kept to the schedule. Basic facilities are available out of sight of the pyramids. The tour returns to the drop off area, a mile walk back, to return by the bus to the museum where the original tour bus awaits. Wear protective clothing, comfortable sturdy shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and bring water and maybe a snack. Restrooms don't have toilet paper in the stalls, you have to gauge how much you'll need and tear it from a roll at the doorway. We thoroughly enjoyed this activity, which lasted about 4.5 hours total. We were returned to the original pick up point. We would take this tour again. It was very hands on, informative and culturally immersive.

A really well-done tour with a knowledgeable guide. Be aware that this tour is physcically demanding. The tour was well-organized and the transportation was efficient. Read the fine print on what you can take - i.e. no purses, bags etc..

We had an absolutely outstanding experience at the Cañada de la Virgen archaeological site, and a huge part of that was due to our tour guide, Alberto. He was kind, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable. The tour itself was immersive and thoughtfully paced, with rich explanations that brought the site’s history, architecture, and cultural significance to life. Beyond the archaeology, Alberto generously shared a wealth of information about San Miguel de Allende as a whole, which made the experience feel even more meaningful and complete. It is clear that Alberto is deeply passionate about what he does and genuinely cares about making the experience special for everyone in the group. We walked away feeling informed, inspired, and grateful for such a high-quality, memorable tour. We would highly recommend him to anyone visiting Cañada de la Virgen.

Tour: We had a great experience on this trip. Our guide was very organized and was so knowledgeable about the site and regional history that he really made it vivid and memorable. We learned so much and had a great time exploring the site. Like every good tour, it left us wanting to learn more! We were also lucky enough to see some of the beautiful horses that roam the area. Highly recommend this tour while you’re in the area. The pace was good for reasonably fit persons. Site: Restroom is available at the site entrance only. You will not be able to carry in bags of any sort. There are secure lockers to leave your bags at the entrance. Uphill and downhill walking on uneven terrain and cobblestones, nothing extreme. Opportunity to climb to the top of the central building and take in the entire view (optional).

Alex was a great guide! Very knowledgable and friendly. He picked us up at the designated location in a car, and then drove us to the site where we boarded a bus. The site is really beautiful. The walk to the site is a little steep in places, but the scenery makes the walk enjoyable. Look for the leaf-cutter ants!

Highly recommended archeological excursion while in San Miguel! Horacio was very friendly and knowledgeable. Be prepared for lots of stairs, but otherwise not a challenging hike. The pyramid and site are can't miss!

The drive and walk to the site gives a chance to see the country side and view of the mountains from the ranch the site is located on. The pyramid itself is magnificent and the adjacent garden is fascinating but what really made the whole trip was the guide, Horatio, who was so well informed and funny.

Our guide Horacio was informative and entertaining. And while the pyramid complex might not be as grand as the one at Teotihuacan, the experience here benefits from the limited number of people who are allowed at the site at one time and the lack of commercialism.
