The classes are focused on traditional Indonesian cuisine using fresh & seasonal local produce, ensuring all dishes are packed with flavor. During the class, you will learn traditional cooking techniques, and the staff will inform you what ingredients you can use as substitutes abroad, to ensure you can prepare the dishes authentically and innovatively back home.
Cooking and food are at the heart of the classes, but you’ll leave with much more than a full stomach. During the class, you can ask our chefs anything you like. They love to share their knowledge of Indonesian culture and local life.
The chefs are from either Lombok mainland or the Gili islands, and are well versed in the local Sasak culture; from marriage traditions and social norms to education and local lifestyles, you’ll get an intimate picture of what it is to be Indonesian.

Learn how to cook authentic Indonesian food at Gili Cooking Classes! Gili Cooking Classes provides a relaxed and fun space to indulge in a memorable cultural experience. Our charismatic chefs will guide you and your friends through preparing, cooking, and eating several of the region’s most popular dishes like kelopon, mie goreng, fried tempe, and more. Whether you love Indonesian food, cooking is your passion or you're just curious, Gili Cooking Classes offers a fantastic, fun-filled introduction to the Indonesian cooking culture! Open every day with classes at 11:30am, 4pm, and 7pm/8pm (low season/high season). The Intro Course (3 dishes, 1h30) - Kelopon - Fried tempe + peanut sauce - Fried noodles Four of a Kind (4 dishes, 2h00) - Kelopon - Fried tempe + peanut sauce - Fried noodles - Yellow chicken curry The Super Six (6 dishes, 2h30) - Kelopon - Fried tempe + peanut sauce - Fried noodles - Yellow chicken curry - Chicken taliwang - Gado gado Vegetarian or vegan? No problem! We will replace the chicken with tofu/tempe and we have vegan oyster sauce. We can accommodate almost all dietary preferences.

5.00A great experience! I cooked all 6 dishes and they were all altered to suit a vegan diet! Delicious food and I’m excited to be able to take what I learnt back with me to Australia. Instructor was great, I definitely recommend!

5.00Very nice cooking class! We did the short one where you learn 3 dishes, we felt that was enough. You receive all the recipes in the end, also the other dishes, plus a bonus sambal recipe. The instructor was very good! We had fun.

5.00Beautiful experience. You learn about aromas, flavors, and ingredients; you cook your own dinner with two courses and dessert, it is truly worth it. The guys are incredible, and by sitting down to eat in a restaurant, you experience it, learn, and meet new people! Truly amazing

5.00The cooking class with Indonesian food was excellent. We had a lot of fun. You can choose between three different menus. The ingredients and cooking steps are explained very well. The chefs were funny and very helpful. The group size of seven people was also well chosen. Clear recommendation. This is something you should have done on Gili Air. Thank you very much for the experience and the great recipes.

5.00We had such an amazing experience doing this cooking class on Gili Air and would 100% do it again! We chose the 4-dish package (there are different options with 3, 4, or 6 dishes), and it was absolutely worth it. The whole experience was fun, authentic, and incredibly well organized. The staff was super friendly, helpful, and made everyone feel comfortable from the beginning. What we loved most was that everything was made completely fresh from scratch. Nothing was pre-made — we prepared everything ourselves, from the curry paste/sauce to the peanut sauce and all the spices and ingredients. You really learn a lot about the local cooking techniques and flavors. The food was absolutely delicious, and there was SO much of it — definitely come hungry! One of the nicest parts for us as a couple was that we shared one cooking station together, which made the class even more fun and interactive. Cooking together, helping each other, and laughing along the way made it a really special experience. If you are visiting Gili Air, we can highly recommend this cooking class. Great food, amazing people, lots of fun, and unforgettable memories!

Fun Indonesian Cooking, But pricey for a Shared Station

5.00Booked directly with the school on Gili Air, paid by cash. We did the 1.5 hour class and while it was fun and educational, it is over priced for what you get from it. 2 people had to share one cooking station and the ingredients, it felt a bit crowded. It was well run and supervised, and you got to sit down and eat after you made your food. If you have some spare time and want to learn to cook Indonesian food, then give this a go, and they do give you the recipes for all of the things you can cook there, not just for what you did in your session. We give it a 3 star for value, but 5 star for fun, well run class.
