Urquhart Castle
Urquhart Castle
We will drive from Invergordon and visit Urquhart Castle. A historic fortress located on the shore of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It holds a strategic position overlooking Loch Ness, one of Scotland's most famous lochs. The exact origins of Urquhart Castle are uncertain, but it is believed to have been built in the 13th century. The castle played a significant role in the conflicts between the Scottish clans and the English during the Wars of Scottish Independence. It changed hands several times and underwent various modifications and expansions over the centuries. Since then, it has remained in ruins but has become an iconic and popular tourist attraction due to its stunning location and association with the legend of the Loch Ness Monster. The loch itself is known worldwide for the Loch Ness Monster, often referred to as "Nessie," and many visitors come to the area in the hope of catching a glimpse of this elusive creature.
Clava Cairns
The Clava Cairns, also known as the Prehistoric Burial Cairns of Bulnuaran of Clava, are a group of three well-preserved Bronze Age burial cairns located near Inverness, Scotland. These cairns are estimated to be around 4,000 years old and are known for their distinctive circular structures and alignment with the solstice. The Clava Cairns consist of passage graves, which were burial chambers constructed with large stone slabs and covered with mounds of earth and stones. The cairns were used for communal burials, and they likely held both human remains and grave goods. The precise purpose and rituals associated with these burials are not fully understood, but they provide valuable insights into the prehistoric cultures of the region. It's worth noting that the Clava Cairns have gained some modern-day recognition due to their resemblance to the fictional Craigh na Dun stone circle featured in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. Our recent cruise had a very unexpected port change and at the last minute changed to Inverness, Scotland. We reached out to John P. from Corran Cottage Tours and he scheduled us right up. We thought the price was great! There was an itinerary he had but we asked for a few changes and he gladly accommodated us. His price for the 4 of us was very reasonable - the service he gave us was excellent, and his knowledge of each area was superb. It was so nice to walk around all these areas and ask him questions, to be able to stay longer if we wanted, or leave a bit earlier if we were done. He was there ready for us when we got off the ship and had us back in plenty of time. His van was very clean and roomy. Not having to get on and off a bus with 50 other tourists was great! If we get back to the Inverness area, we'll definitely call on John. We felt like we made a new friend that day. If you have any questions, be sure to let me know - I'd love to help anyway I can.

This is a personal tour that takes you to some nice places around Inverness. My husband and I were driven around by our tour guide, Alistare, who was a wealth of knowledge on current and past Scotland. Great way to see these hard to reach spots!

John was a wonderful guide and shared so much information. He made it easy to go at our own pace. We stopped at scenic locations such as Dunrobin Castle and Glenmorangie distillery. We wanted to find specific gifts to take home and he located a great shop that had exactly what we were looking for.
