Burleigh Head National Park
As you walk along the scenic shoreline and rainforest trails, your guide will bring the land to life with Dreaming stories and cultural insights. Discover ancient shell middens, traditional ochre sites, and significant places that have been used for generations by the Yugambeh language-speaking people. Keep an eye out for native wildlife, including brush turkeys, water dragons, and sea eagles soaring overhead. During the right season, you may even spot humpback whales migrating along the coast. Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the headland, where waves crash against volcanic rock formations, pandanus palms line the trails, and the scent of the ocean mingles with the rich greenery of the rainforest. Learn about bush tucker, medicinal plants, and the deep spiritual connection Aboriginal people have with this land.
Echo Beach
As part of your journey on the Jellurgal Walkabout tour, you’ll pass by Echo Beach, a peaceful stretch of Tallebudgera Creek nestled at the base of Burleigh Headland. This tranquil spot, with its crystal-clear waters and lush surroundings, has long been a place of significance for the Yugambeh language-speaking people. Your Aboriginal guide will share stories of how the creek was traditionally used for fishing, gathering food, and cultural practices. Learn about the rich marine life that thrives in these waters and the importance of tidal flows to the ecosystem. The calm, shallow waters of Echo Beach also make it a popular place for families to swim and relax, just as it has been a gathering place for generations. As you take in the breathtaking views of the creek meeting the rainforest, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the deep spiritual and cultural connection the local Aboriginal people have with this land.

Our cruise ship itinerary included a day in Brisbane and, since I had read about the Jellurgal Center, we decided to spend our day exploring Aboriginal Culture. We were extremely pleased with our decision. The team at the Center were very knowledgeable and did everything in their power to make our experience memorable. The walking tour afforded our guide the opportunity to share information about the creatures, plants and minerals that were significant to the local Aboriginal peoples and to share some of their fascinating Dream Time stories. The Center is very convenient to several beaches as well as numerous other Gold Coast attractions. While the Jellurgal Center is about an hour and 20 minutes’ drive from Brisbane, there are public transport options available.

Due to rainy weather conditions we weren't sure this tour would happen, but the staff kept in constant contact with us, and were able to make happen. The talk and walk were wonderful - informative and emotional. Particularly loved the stories of the Dreaming. Our guide, Tyreece, was warm, friendly, and a wealth of knowledge.

The Jelugal Aboriginal Cultural Experience was truly special, and we felt deeply honoured to share in their stories and knowledge. As Indigenous people, the opportunity to connect through shared values and lived experiences was incredibly meaningful. We left feeling grateful, inspired, and privileged to have been welcomed into such a respectful and powerful cultural space.

Authentic insight into the past and present connection of the true residents of Australia to the land. It was a privilege to understand more of the culture and practices of the different nations of the Yugambeh language group. Our tour guide, Tyreese, created a safe space to ask questions and was extremely knowledgeable. 10 out of 10. Would fully recommend.

Unforgettable and enlightening morning. Thank you Jellurgal Cultural Centre team for warmly and generously sharing your Cultural knowledge of this hugely significant area. It made such a difference to my stay "In the GC" which is very surface much of the time. Everyone should take time to visit this Centre and take an enriching tour. Grow your knowledge and develop some understanding of the people who have been the resilient Custodians of this land and all that lives apon it for over 20,000 years. Thank you to the elders of the past, present and future for this kind opportunity.
