Kenrokuen Garden
Kenrokuen (兼六園) in Kanazawa is justifiably classified as one of Japan's "three most beautiful landscape gardens" alongside Mito's Kairakuen and Okayama's Korakuen. The spacious grounds used to be the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle and were constructed by the ruling Maeda family over a period of nearly two centuries. Opened to the public in 1871, Kenrokuen features a variety of flowering trees which provide the garden with a different look for each season.
D. T. Suzuki Museum
The D.T. Suzuki Museum (鈴木大拙館, Suzuki Daisetsu Kan) is a small museum commemorating the life and works of Suzuki Daisetz Teitaro (1870-1966), a prominent Buddhist philosopher. The museum was opened in 2011 in the district of Kanazawa where Suzuki was born, a ten minute walk from Kenrokuen. On display are exhibitions showcasing the writings of D.T. Suzuki which allow the visitor to learn more about his life and philosophy. In addition, the architecture of the museum serves as an interpretation of D.T. Suzuki's life and religious scholarship; its use of clean, simple lines and open spaces causes visitors to pause and reflect.

Yoshi is a great guide, so helpful and easy to understand. Without him, we could not have navigated the various districts with the historical insights he provided. He picked out a great place for lunch by the garden, helped us order while regaling us with stories of city.

Tomoko was our Guide for our day trip visiting Kanazawa and highly recommended! We found her to be kind, informative and utterly passionate in sharing of her home village. She met us at the Train Station, and from there we embarked on a lovely day filled with beautiful sights; gorgeous gardens, architectural designs, and crafts galore. We visited historic geisha & samurai districts, imagining ourselves transported back in time courtesy of her exceptional narratives, and together with her scrapbook of photos and artistic images, lent a deeper understanding on the rich impact to the culture of Japan of this quaint hidden gem. Our time with Tomoko actually felt like an excursion with a family friend. We found her spirited and engaging - making her a wonderful ambassador for Kanazawa.

We had a great day with Yoshi. He was incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of not only Kanazawa but all of Japan. We took public transport like locals and visited many interesting places. We learnt all about the Geisha and tea culture. A beautiful garden was our next stop along with a fascinating castle complex. Yoshi explained all of the history here and also interesting aspects of the architecture. Our last stop was the samurai district which was also very interesting. All in all a very comprehensive visit for just one day. Thank you Yoshi!

Masa was a wonderful guide. She checked in to gauge wanted to see and also whether we needed a break during the 4 hour walking tour. She is a local of Kanazawa and very knowledgeable. She took us to many points of interest and her pride in her city is evident. It was gorgeous to see her genuine excitement when we discovered that the plum trees had blossomed. She knew all the tricks - the roads to take to avoid walking up steep hills! Highly recommended

Our 4hr walking tour with our guide Yoshi was fantastic. Despite the very cold weather we were able to cover Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa Castle & the Samurai district. Yoshi was very relaxed & provided a great background to the history of the area. We loved it!

Yumi is an incredible guide. Please make sure you ask for her. For starters, our tour was highly customizable. We already had our top 3 things we wanted to see in Kanazawa and Yumi was able to adapt the entire tour to prioritize those. Yumi is super knowledgeable about Japanese history and culture. My friend and I would point out random things during our tour and ask "what's that?". To our surprise, Yumi always had a deep explanation ready. We learned a ton. As a fun fact, Yumi is fluent in three languages (Japanese, English, Portuguese), and also knows a bit of Spanish. She's a well-read person, so you'll always have something interesting to talk about with her while walking the streets of Kanazawa.

Our family of 4 (two young adult children) loved this tour. Our guide, Yoshi, was tremendous -- he was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, and his English was terrific. He took us through the Kenrokuen Garden, Kanzawa Castle and the Samurai district. There is an awful lot we would have missed if we toured on our own. We would take this tour again in a heartbeat and strongly recommend it. If you choose this tour, be mindful that it is mostly outside and be prepared for rain. Also, Kanazawa Castle is shoe-free, and it is not heated. An extra pair of socks would have been helpful.
