This early morning 5 mile adventure starts with an amazing overlook at Liberty Memorial, then trekking down the hill past Union Station. We’ll stop at a local Mexican shop for refreshing fruit juice as we explore the architecturally and culturally diverse neighborhood of the Westside. We learn about the historical West Bottoms, as well as the Pendergast era in addition to experiencing alleyways lined with street art. This hike is full of Instagramable spots and hidden Kansas City gems. This won’t be a leisurely stroll in flip flops, as we go up steep hills and staircases and sometimes walk in direct sun. You'll need good walking or running shoes and your water bottle!

The Crossroads, officially known as the Crossroads Arts District, is a neighborhood within the Greater Downtown area of Kansas City that is home to more than 400 local artists and 100 independent studios in what is the most concentrated gallery in the nation. Located at 19th Street and Baltimore Avenue, directly south of the Downtown Loop and north of Crown Center, it is more than just an intersection of two streets, it is a vibrant and diverse area that welcomes all walks of life and all forms of artistic expression. Beyond the art galleries, there are dozens of restaurants from late-night diners to high-end sushi, boutique shops, professional design studios, architectural firms and advertising agencies. What are you looking for -- flowers, shoes, live music, furniture, fashion, hamburgers or a glass of beer? You'll find them here. But that's not all. Amidst former abandoned warehouses and historic buildings is Kansas City's famous Film Row district, Brewer's Alley, the historic freight district and hotels. Crossroads, which has a population of 10,000, dates to the 1920s and 1930s when Kansas City established a strong connection to Hollywood, serving as a centralized distribution point for the burgeoning movie industry. At one time, Film Row occupied nearly 20 buildings in a four-block area with major studio tenants such as Twentieth Century Fox, United Artists, Paramount and Warner Brothers. Looking for a place to eat or have a drink? The list includes Jim's, Mildred's, Cafe Corazon, Fiorella's Jack Stack BBQ, Green Dirt on Oak, Kon Tiki Room, Morning Rounds Bakery, Union Station Kansas City, Session Taco, Jalapenos Mexican Grill, Farina, Affare, Novel, Gruenauer, Cosmo Burger, Border Brewing Company and Buffalo State Pizza Company & Bar.

Despite the heat it was a great urban hike experience. Lisa is an unbelievably pleasant guide who has the perfect demeanor and is very knowledgeable. It was a great experience all around. I took my three kids (10, 12, 15) and they enjoyed learning about the history of the city and seeing the different murals. 10/10 would go on another urban hike.

We did the Crossroads Art District & Westside Urban Hike and it was so much fun! I was surprised that the majority of the people on our tour were locals (we were visiting and had never been to Kansas City before). What a great intro to the city and a chance to see areas we never would have seen on our own! We started at the WW1 Memorial, which has a great view of the skyline, continued on to check out the inside of Union Station, saw a ton of beautiful murals and interesting buildings as we wandered through the neighborhoods, had a brief rest stop with a drink at a Mexican restaurant along the way, and visited countless stops with great views. We learned so much about the history, culture, and architecture of the city, and covered a lot of ground. At the end, we hopped on the train to go back to our starting point, where our guide provided us with a ton of restaurant recommendations for lunch. I would absolutely recommend for anyone visiting Kansas City or for anyone local who is just wanting to check out a part of town they’ve never explored.

We enjoyed the hike so much! Lots of hidden gems and tidbits of history mixed in. It was a great evening activity! We stopped for wine and snacks at a lovely boutique and were able to visit with the owner who was so passionate about helping others. Overall, a wonderful evening exploring the area. Highly recommend!

We booked an Urban Hike to celebrate my husband’s 40th birthday and invited several of our friends. Even as 20 year residents of Kansas City, we had an absolute blast exploring the Crossroads and Westside!! From start to finish, we learned so many interesting facts about our city that we often don’t take the time to stop and appreciate! We loved seeing the colorful street art and walking through the beautifully renovated homes of the Westside! Lisa, our guide, was extremely, friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating! I highly recommend Urban Hike KC! We will definitely be joining another hike in the near future!!
