This was my first time to Japan and I wanted to experience as much culture as I could. After much research I came across the Kyoto Samurai Experience on Trip Advisor read through many of the positive reviews. Its sounded like the perfect experience I was searching for. I have to say the experience totally exceeded my expectations. From the moment I arrived, all the staff were super friendly and welcoming. The setting couldn't have been more perfect, a genuine samurai residence. The master samurai was also exactly how I envisioned, made me feel like I was on the set of The Last Samurai. Being able to hold an over 600 year old samurai sword was a once in a life time dream for me. All in all I would highly recommend this to anyone and if I had more time in Japan I would have done the experience again.

Honestly didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. Our instructor was patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about samurai culture — not just going through the motions for tourists. We practiced real sword techniques with a bokken, learned proper stances, and even got the philosophy behind each move explained. By the end, I was swinging like I'd been training for weeks! If you're in Kyoto, stop overthinking it and just book this. Easily the highlight of my trip.

Super fun! Learned a lot. 2 adults and a 13/10 year old. Handling the sword was the best but just being in the home was a memory in itself. Highly recommend.

If you want to grasp the feeling of being part of Japan's impressive history, and experiencing in real the Samurai culture instead of visiting a museaum, then this is for you! My son and me spent a little bit more than an hour, diving into Samurai culture - their organisation, zen meditation, and, of course, handling a Samurai sword !!! - in the stunning sourrounding of one of Kyoto's old town houses which used to belong to a Samurai in the past. Considering the danger of the sword handling itself, I was especially reassured by the high-quality staff supervising on the one hand, and on the other hand sharing their passion about this part of Japan's history. In summary: we had a lot of fun and our money's worth. Another "plus" is the souvenir pictures taken by the staff and shared with you to make this an unforgattable joyful moment spent as a Samurai. I do recommend this experience.

Amazing. Setting was superb - being in an over 200 year old Tokugawa samurai house. You would think something like this would feel very fake and goofy, but not at all, it was serous and spiritual experience. The Japanese samurai demonstrations were amazing, both samurai demonstrated a high level of Iaido skill and technical prowess, and were very knowledgable on samurai culture. The zen meditation included a sound bath, and the hosts taught us some details about meditation that I had not heard before and will be very useful. Additionally the way they entwined the meditation with the iaido class was very interesting. The English speaking guides were friendly and professional and translated very well, making the activity easy to follow and understand. Holding the antique katana was also surreal, and the respect the staff all had for them was beautiful. This was thoroughly a unique experience and I’d reccomend anyone with an interest in meditation or samurai history not to miss it! It appeared sold out but due to cancellations I was able to secure a place pretty last minute so don’t lose hope if it says sold out !
