Yellowstone Hiking Guides safely leads hiking groups into the Lamar Valley on a wildlife viewing day hike tour.
Our guides are well versed in Yellowstone's unique wildlife. Safety and fun are our top priorities. Regularly, we spot wolves, bears, and other rare wildlife from the trail in the backcountry of Yellowstone.
Our tours are off the beaten path, traveling on bison trails for the majority of the hike. Most tour providers in Yellowstone spend the majority of the day on the road, or very close to the road. Our guides take you into the backcountry for unique views of the Lamar Valley that you cannot see from the roadway.
Frequently, our guests tell us that they could not do this hike on their own through the massive bison herd and unpredictable wildlife.

Great experience that we would have not done on our own. Saw lots of wildlife out in the valley.. guide provided great snacks, lunch, lots of information and made sure we were comfortable with the experience.

We had a wonderful experience from start to finish. Our guide, Emily, was exceptionally knowledgeable and well-prepared, and all the logistics were handled seamlessly. When a bear closure required her to adjust the route, she turned it into an opportunity—leading us across two beautiful creeks and then to an unforgettable moment watching a large herd of bison crossing nearby. Emily’s deep understanding of bison behavior helped us fully enjoy the encounter, stay safe, and continue our hike without any issues. Along the way, we took in Yellowstone’s breathtaking landscapes, spotted a honey badger, discovered wolf tracks, and noticed many other fascinating details we would have easily missed on our own. It was the perfect balance of adventure, wildlife, and scenery. We would wholeheartedly recommend this hike—and especially this company—to anyone looking for a truly memorable Yellowstone experience.

I arrived at Specimen Trailhead as my reservation stated at 730. I waited until 845 and no tour guide showed so the excitement I had for 4 weeks became a huge disappointment

Jake was a fantastic guide! We hiked about 6 miles, in total (according to my phone), most of which was on paths, although there were several times when we hiked through the sagebrush to navigate around the bison. We saw hundreds of bison, pronghorn, & a coyote. The landscape was breathtaking! I would do this excursion again, in a heartbeat!

Very informative in one of the great nature preserves in America. During lunch, we sat on a log by the river. We had a buffalo walk by while an American Eagle flew overhead. We were fortunate to see deer, badger and many birds in addition to multiple Buffalo. Leave extra time to arrive because the road to Lamar Valley in the morning has many buffalo initiate traffic jams.
