Mellah
The Mellah in Marrakech, the city’s Jewish Quarter, was established in the 16th century during the reign of Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur. It was created to house the growing Jewish community, who were often involved in trade, craftsmanship, and medicine. Jews had been present in Morocco for centuries, but the Mellah became their center of life in Marrakech. Over the centuries, the Mellah flourished with numerous synagogues, schools, and businesses, becoming a vibrant community. However, in the 20th century, many Jews emigrated, especially after Morocco gained independence in 1956. The population of Jews in Marrakech, and Morocco as a whole, significantly dwindled, but the Mellah remains an important symbol of Jewish history in the city. Today, it is a key tourist destination, with historic synagogues, the Jewish cemetery, and remnants of its once-thriving community.

What a phenomenal experience! I don’t often travel with a tour operator because I like travelling independently. However, this service was simply incredible. Everyone I interacted with were super kind and helpful. They all have impeccable command of English and they take amazing care of their clients. They are always several steps ahead and think well in advance about their customers’ needs. They alway make you feel looked after so it’s easy to relax and simply enjoy the colours and sounds of Morocco. Don’t hesitate hiring these guys!

The journey was superb, even on 44° heat he adapted the journey so we wouldn’t be exposed to direct sun through the whole tour! Very knowledgeable and gave us great recommendations for authentic food and other places to explore.

We can highly recommend the tour with Redone. We not only explored the Medersa Ben Youssef and Bahia Palace with him, but also learned many interesting details about the life and history of the country. During the tour through the souks, he responded superbly to our wishes and gave us interesting insights. An absolute highlight was a break with a “sand coffee”.
