A floating village on the northern reaches of the Tonle Sap, Mechrey is not the loveliest spot in the world, but it offers some great bird-spotting opportunities, as well as a chance to witness a unique way of life for those who live on the lake. The establishment of initiatives such as the one at Mechrey can’t strictly be called ecotourism, although it does give people alternatives to fishing as a source of income. But they are an opportunity to witness an extraordinary way of life that is also under threat, and to clock up some lovely birdlife. The tour itself starts off in a pretty smelly artificial canal which you travel along for about a kilometer until the waterway opens out on to the main river and the floating village.
Tonle Sap Lake
Tonlé Sap is a lake in the northwest of Cambodia. It belongs to the Mekong River system. It is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and one of the most diverse and productive ecosystems in the world, designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1997 due to its high biodiversity.

We had a memorable experience with bang Thy a very good guide who knew how to explain to us in detail, village, floating as well as life on the water, we had many emotions when going to see the children, filled with joy and happiness, the smile of a child gives future hope of a life full of history. Thanks again my children came home with lots of emotions as well as the parents. I recommend 200%

We had the most amazing time on our trip to the floating villages of Mechrey, it was just myself and my partner on the entire tour and we were taken out by Thy, our guide and Sythat, our driver. Our experience was fun, interesting and unique; as we began the day by boat witnessing the floating villages without the crowds and getting our every question answered by Thy, we then stopped off at one of the locals houses where we learnt more about the history of Cambodia and some of the things the locals from the village make and how they live. Following on from the tour we stopped by a rice wine farm and witnessed the process behind the making of this and even got to try some! Before heading home we got a ride on a water buffalo cart, a truly unique experience that took us back in time! We could not recommend this experience more to anyone looking for a more intimate and private tour of the floating villages. Most importantly our tour could not have been so personalised and enjoyable without our fabulous guide Thy and Sythat, they were beyond attentive and ensured we got even more out of this trip than we could have hoped for! (So much so we booked our tour of the temples with them again the next day).

It was an incredible tour ! We were so lucky to discover Mechrey on the boat, with absolutely no other tourists around, only the locals just doing life, the kids leaving school for lunch etc. It was a truly unique and authentic experience with our guide explaining so much to us. We then stopped in a family house to learn and try the local rice wine. And then at a street stall for some grilled crickets and frogs ! The last stop was at Angkor Artisans where we learnt a lot about the ancient wood and stone carving techniques, the silk weaving etc. It was beautiful, out of the crowded places and truly supporting the local businesses (and not the big tour company). Would recommend a 100%, go visit the floating village with the brothers !
