From the moment you step inside Mr Moon’s giant mouth, you are exposed to a world full of carnival flair, from the rides and attractions that send you sky-high, to historical carousel rides, Melbourne’s Luna Park has been the face of fun in St Kilda for generations.
Luna Park is the oldest theme park in Australia attracting thousands of visitors every year to enjoy some of the most iconic rides in Melbourne. Built in 1912, Luna Park is a testament to the bygone era of American amusement parks in the style of Coney Island, New York. The most famous of the Park’s attractions is its Roller Coaster – The Great Scenic Railway, a large wooden coaster that projects its passengers, at high speed, around the outside of the entire Park. It boasts the title of being the oldest continually operating wooden roller coaster in the world and the only one of its kind with a standing brakeman in control aboard its moving carriages.

I attended Luna Park alone having heard very mixed reviews from other people. Some declare it overrated, poor value for money, crowded and lacking in thrill rides; others love it and have been back multiple times. While I can see why some may not like it, I’m generally happy with my experience and don’t regret going. In total there are 21 rides plus a few carnival games. I ended up riding about a third of them: Ghost Train, Scenic Railway, Sky Rider (ferris wheel 🎡), Moon Balloons, Carousel and Arabian Merrys. My favourite one would have to be the Scenic Railway. It has that vintage vibe to it with its wooden tracks and carved dragon carriages; it has some thrilling drops without being too frightening or something that would cause motion sickness. On the subject of rides, that’s something favourable I’d like to say re - the staff: they’re to be commended on their commitment to safety. Case in point: they’re are diligent about communicating safety measures such as no phones/devices on rides and even about how they load the rides. There are some like the Sky Rider and Moon Balloons where they need to be loaded in a specific order (the carts are numbered) and riders need to disembark in a particular order to maintain safety on the ride. This was communicated and the staff did a great job. The staff were also very thorough about conducting safety checks and getting riders to move accordingly. Apart from the rides, my favourite thing about Luna Park would have to be the murals and vintage carvings. Both help maintain a vintage vibe and heritage facade, which makes me think of movies with carnivals in the 1920s and 1930s. I was particularly fond of the gift shop for that reason. I was also impressed by employees’ abilities to manage the lines of people wanting to go on rides and those cueing for food. As to why I didn’t award a 5 star rating? Firstly, the toilets weren’t exactly what you’d call clean. Floors were constantly wet making for an unpleasant experience. If staff put as much effort into cleaning the ablutions as they do in other areas, I’d be thrilled. Secondly, game prizes and prices. For one game, they’re very expensive and even the bigger grander prizes aren’t particularly appealing; the consolation prizes are rubbish and look cheap and unappealing. As much as I enjoyed the nostalgia of the laughing clowns and lucky ducks, I wasn’t thrilled with what I won.

Great gem in St Kilda. Staff could be more efficient in loading and unloading rides. However all staff were excellent. Food stalls not all open although it was school holidays. (No pass-outs were allowed.)

Compared to Sydney this place is amazing, so many rides and activities. Staff are so friendly and helpful. Definitely worth getting the unlimited ride pass.

Ok it is not Disney! But it has the nostalgia taste of past days, quite a bit of history. Spent 2 hours with my 17 years old daughter, we did a couple of rides, it is perfect if you are just looking for family fun, not excessive rides. The families around with young teenagers or a bit younger kids seemed to enjoy. Pricing is fine I believe and it contributes to keep history alive.

They wanted 25 bucks for adults admission who are purely there to chaperone the kids. What happened to the free admission? Sydney does it and we ended up spending more than double that on food and drinks. With that tactic, parents are better off dropping the kids off and head into Acland to spend that 25.

We had a great time seven years ago when the boys were 5 and 7 years old. They got to go on different rides and while it was expensive, it was still reasonable given that we had a good time and wanted to come back. Today it was very expensive and If the boys had enjoyed it, I wouldn’t have minded. We paid $170 just to get in for supposedly unlimited rides, plus the rest (due to waiting at least 30min for each ride) just isn’t worth it. The boys had had enough by 2:00pm and wanted to leave. The staff were wonderful-all very competent, helpful and friendly. I recommend that a limit should be put in place so people don’t need to wait for more than 15 minutes if the entry fee is going to remain so costly.

The park has a variety of rides, ranging from the iconic Scenic Railway rollercoaster to family-friendly attractions like the carousel and bumper cars. The Scenic Railway is particularly a highlight, offering a unique and scenic view of St Kilda beach as it winds through the park, all while providing that thrilling vintage rollercoaster experience. Luna Park also offers a wide selection of food and refreshments, from classic carnival treats like fairy floss and hot dogs to more substantial options. The atmosphere is lively, with a mix of carnival games, live entertainment, and seasonal events adding to the energy of the park

The wait times on rides are horrendous. The rides are quite good when you’re on them. Did 7 rides in 6 hours. The views from the top of some rides are beautiful over the bay. The staff are good and very safety conscious…always making sure harnesses and belts are secured correctly and following good process. My children said it was the best day of their lives.
