Naadam Festival
According to historical records, the Mongols have celebrated the Naadam Festival since the time of the ancient Hunnu Empire. This traditional festival reflects the deep-rooted nomadic culture and warrior heritage of Mongolia. Today, we will drive to the famous horse racing field at Khui Doloon Khudag, located on the western outskirts of Ulaanbaatar, where the Naadam horse races take place. Upon arrival, you will experience the true spirit of Naadam as local people gather in colorful traditional attire, enthusiastically cheering for their favorite horses and young jockeys. Horses are one of the most important symbols of Mongolian life and culture, having been bred, respected, and cherished by nomads for thousands of years. The horse races are organized into six different age categories, each covering a long-distance course across the grasslands. During today’s visit, you will have the opportunity to watch one or two of these race divisions and gain insight into this unique tradition.

At 9:00 a.m., the celebrations begin at Sükhbaatar Central Square with a solemn and symbolic ceremony. Chinggis Khaan’s nine knights, dressed in traditional attire, ceremoniously carry the State Nine White Banners while riding on horseback. Since that time, the banners have been carefully preserved in the State Palace and represent the national prosperity, sovereignty, and the peaceful life. The Naadam Opening Ceremony officially begins at 11:00 a.m. inside the stadium. This spectacular event features a vibrant combination of traditional music, dance, historical reenactments, and cultural performances that celebrate Mongolia’s rich heritage. The opening ceremony lasts approximately one and a half hours and is followed by the first round of the traditional Mongolian wrestling matches, one of the three main events.
