Monteith's Brewing Company

Monteith’s Brewing Company has been part of the West Coast for over 150 years. While brewing no longer happens on site, our Greymouth location is now a world-class visitor attraction celebrating our beer heritage. This 45minute guided experience is a backstage pass to our architecturally designed brewhouse, where you'll hear local stories, explore historic recipes, and see the gear that once brought Monteith’s to life. You'll learn how we brewed our famous beers, then finish with a tasting session exploring beer by smell, sight, and taste - followed by three Monteith’s tap beers or ciders with tasting notes. You’ll also get a Monteith’s 6-pack to take away. Your passport includes discounts for West Coast attractions like Franz Josef Hot Pools, Treetop Walk, and Shantytown Heritage Park. Tours depart daily at 4pm from Monteith’s Brewery, 60 Herbert Street Greymouth. The experience lasts approx. 45 minutes. Monteith’s is wheelchair friendly and child tour passes are available at the bar.

Enjoyed our tour only 40 mins but it’s enough. Cecilia’s knowledge of brewing is great very enthusiastic and a great bar too. Its closes at 9pm as does everywhere else in Greymouth so don’t be late if you want to test the different beers on offer.

  • Best dark beer in the world.

The brewery is a great place to visit with excellent beers on Tap. The lady who did our tour last Wednesday afternoon was amazing. She had great stories about the brewery and westcoast. Down to earth and an all round great person to have a beer with.

We prebooked the brewery tour and Cecilia our guide was excellent! Informative, humorous and adaptive to our likes and dislikes. Would recommend this tour to anyone who likes a drink-not even your average beer drinker 🍺 Variety of products produced by Monteith's is extensive, even for those non-traditional beer drinkers. The tour and products were that good, we made our purchases and filled our hire car. We also ate prior and post tour and the food, same as the beers, was 5 stars 🌟

This is our third visit to Monteiths. The tasting paddle is a great way to sample beers, especially 6 tasters. The tour is informative, even though no current brewing happening, the laid back tasting room is fantastic! Followed up with great food from the restaurant. Always worth visiting

Amazing, we got our complementary 6 pack, and lots of time to chat with our guide, which was awesome. My partner got to have my tasters aswell. Because I don't drink beer, this was an amazing way to celebrate purchasing a home, our engagement and our anniversary as well 😀 highly recommend

  • Lovely beer, food and venue but badly understaffed

Loved the purpose built visitor centre and its large open woodfire. Couldn’t fault the beer and food, it was great. Loved how we could get modest sized tasting/share plates. When we went the place was packed with visitors and the car park was full so we parked on the street. As we entered we were lucky to be able grab a table near the bar and move the previous customers’ used plates, glasses and napkins to one side. We ordered a beer and a tasting paddle and loved all our choices and the food - I had prawns - was delicious. Unfortunately the place was so busy and there were only around four staff and they were absolutely swamped. The dirty dishes on our table weren’t collected for around 20 or 25 minutes and the food took 30 minutes to come. I felt sorry for the staff being under so much pressure to do their jobs. Someone messed up the staffing roster - it was Easter week - and they clearly couldn’t cope which was a real shame. We moved our own glasses to the bar so there was room for our food. I have no complaints about the venue, the beer, food or the service - the girl who served me for food and merchandise was very friendly and welcoming - but when the staff aren’t able to do their jobs properly mistakes and even accidents can happen so as a customer it was not good seeing the staff have to struggle.
