Most importantly, depending on what you want to see, make a booking by checking the Lunar calendar. We went on almost a full moon night and got to see various features of the moon. But a new moon would have been better. Nonetheless, the guides were super informative, we were provided with cold weather jackets as well. We were shown various constellations and got to view star clusters out of 4 different types of telescopes. Overall, I think I’d just want to do the whole experience again on a new moon night.

Due to cloud covering, its not guarenteed that any stars could be seen. Which was what happened to us. But it was good of the supplier to refund half of the ticket costs due to the weather.

Fantastic night with knowledgeable and helpful staff. The combination of Maori culture and astronomy was so very interesting. And we were even given so e help in taking decent photos with our iphones! Thank you to all involved. PS great driver and music tracks on the bus!

This tour is weather dependent. However so long as weather is good, this is an excellent tour. Bring warm clothes but be aware that they will also provide you with heavy jackets

This was an awesome stargazing experience. I got to experience the full glory of the southern hemisphere sky. Our guide expertly tied the constellations to western, Maori AND Chinese cultural traditions. There were also three different telescopes set up for selected observations. Highly recommended!

What an amazing experience seeing the stars and the Milky Way clearly. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and we had all the time we needed to view stars through the telescopes that were set up, without feeling rushed. Would recommend 100%

Although it was cloudy and the group was offered a refund, the majority took a chance thesky would clear. We were able to see a few things but the clouds rolled in! Despite this, the Dark Sky team kept the time informative, interesting and engaging—great job!

I was really looking forward to seeing a lot of stars. It was a perfect, clear evening. There was a full moon (not great), but it was a lunar eclipse with a blood moon (great). From the Dark Sky Project location in Lake Tekapo, we all got warm coats and piled into the van. There was probably 20 people? Since it is an active/working observatory, we paused at the gate and waited for the "all clear" from the observatory before the van entered the grounds. All lights were restricted. We had little red lights to help, but with the moon, it wasn't necessary. After the guide told us about the observatory and some other information about stargazing, we were led to the telescopes and could chose which to see first. There were 4 telescopes set up for viewing. The excitement quickly died when I realized that being farsighted, each telescope would have to be readjusted for my vision. Glasses didn't work well with the telescopes. I didn't want to make them adjust it just for me, then back for everyone else. So I hung back until everyone had seen through that telescope before they adjusted it. Of course, this meant that I was hurried through seeing the them, as everyone was starting to walk back to board the van. So I spent my time waiting for everyone, then didn't get much time looking, much less enjoying the stars. On the telescope that looked at the moon, that person was really kind and took some pictures of the blood moon with my cellphone. While waiting, I set up a tripod and was able to take a few pictures with my cellphone. The Milky Way with the Southern Cross and even the Magellanic Clouds. That was fun.

Fantastic. Do it. We expected to be able to see more (and different hemisphere) stars, but did not expect the in-depth explanations of what we were seeing. Our guide was an astronomer, very knowledgable, and incorporated science, myth and history. The view from inside the crater was amazing. We also were able to look through three telescopes to see Jupiter and two nebulas up close. The only thing I missed was some more info about the Dark Sky Project. I'm not much of a start photographer, so don't judge by the photos!

This Mount Cook Observatory tour was absolutely phenomenal and one of the highlights of my trip. The experience opened my eyes to the beauty of the night sky and helped me learn so much more about the stars, the moon, and other celestial objects. The guide explained everything in a very clear and engaging way, making it easy to understand even if you’re new to astronomy. Seeing the stars so clearly in such a dark sky was truly breathtaking. The equipment provided was great, and the overall atmosphere made the experience even more special. It’s not just a tour—it’s an educational and memorable journey into space. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Mount Cook. It’s definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
