Shuri Castle
IMPORTANT NOTICE: The main buildings of Shuri Castle were destroyed by fire in the night of October 31, 2019. The city hopes to rebuild the main building by 2022, the 50th anniversary of Okinawa's reversion to Japan. A city district of Naha today, Shuri is the name of the former capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Shuri Castle (首里城, Shurijō) served as the administrative center and residence of the Ryukyu kings for several centuries until Okinawa became a Japanese prefecture in 1879. The castle is included as one of the UNESCO World Heritage designated Castles of the Ryukyu Kingdom sites. Shuri Castle was originally built in the late 1300s, and played an integral role in the political unification of the island. Wars and fires destroyed the castle multiple times over the centuries, most recently in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. The current buildings are beautiful reconstructions dating from 1992. The approach to the castle's central buildings leads through multiple gates, including the well known Shureimon Gate. The castle's hilltop location allows for nice views over Naha along the way.
Kokusaidori
Naha’s International Street was known post-WW II as the miracle mile for its almost-instantaneous reconstruction. With rows of souvenirs and restaurants, it is a staple sightseeing spot for visitors to Okinawa. Popular spots to visit include the central Makishi Public Market, dining establishments and the Don Quijote, Japan’s largest discount store. If you’re going for a stroll at night, there are izakaya where you can listen to performances of traditional Okinawa folk music and shamisen players.

Hide was very knowledgeable and flexible with my guided tour and I was able to learn a lot and experience places in Okinawa I would not have normally been able to go to. Hide even had a kind friend that was able to drive us around to areas that we wouldn't have been able to reach by the monorail, such as Mihama American Village, which added to the experience and positive memories from my trip to Okinawa. I would definitely recommend a guided tour, especially if you are lucky enough to get someone as knowledgeable, kind, and customer-service oriented as Hide.

I visited many places during my short stay in Okinawa, organised very well by Aki-san. Her knowledge of Okinawa history made my visits to the ancient ruins here more meaningful.

We had a great day guided throughout Okinawa. Our guide was Michie and she communicated a number of times ahead of our visit (came from a cruise) to personalize the day. We saw a lot, had an amazing lunch, and it was a nice balance of what we were looking for. It’s great you can customize.

Hyde has an absolute passion for history and is well versed in this area. He had planned for us to visit the Okinawa Peace Museum, the Himeyuri Peace Museum, the memorial is Lt General Simon Buckner Jr, lunch at the fish markets, the former Japanese Naval Underground Headquarters and then to the shopping district. It was a little different to what we expected as there was not much walking and mainly taxi rides which had not been communicated in advance. Great tour if you’re into history. We would have liked to see more of the local culture and flare of this city.
