John’s of 12th Street in NYC has a rich history intertwined with the Italian Mafia. Located in the East Village, this iconic Italian restaurant opened in 1908 and quickly became a popular spot for mobsters12. During Prohibition, it operated as a speakeasy, making wine and whiskey in the basement1. One of the most notorious events associated with John’s was the 1922 assassination of Umberto Rocco Valenti, a Morello family hitman, who was killed there during a "peace meeting". The restaurant’s old-world charm and connection to the Mafia have made it a legendary spot, even featured in shows like Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos We meet inside the back room of this iconic "Red Sauce Joint" for many reasons including the historic relationship to the beginnings of the NYC Mafia

This was a very interesting tour that highlighted the history of NY mafia members. Our tour guide, Frank, was well-versed and entertaining, showing and telling us about interesting sites frequented by the mafia. The restaurants and food were well-paced. We had a great time and always take tours when we come to NY. This was one of our favorites to date!

Really interesting discussion of one segment of the Italian mob in NYC from the late 1800's up to the '80's, when it seemingly was beat. And tied to physical landmarks, businesses and residences in the neighborhood, which we walked around to and saw. Topped off by three amazing food courses at different venues. Really enjoyable, and Frank was a terrific guide!

Huge group of people on tour!! We've taken many Viator around the world, this was ridiculous. Couldn't hear or ask questions of your guide, total waste of time and money. 30 people crowded in NY streets and restaurants!!

What a tremendous tour. Every bit of it was extremely interesting. Led by Dennis, an NYC undercover cop and eventual detective, who grew up in Little Italy with an encyclopedic knowledge of the events from the beginning of the Cosa Nostra through present day. A great story-teller, Dennis made the many stops along the tour feel like a walk-through history? Add to that, and absolutely great taste of Little Italy. If you do just one tour in New York City, this has got to be it!
