Québec, former capital of New France, features hundreds of historical markers, a unique architecture as well as French and British institutions that have survived to this day.
For this reason, Old Québec is the ideal UNESCO World Heritage destination to help history lovers connect the dots of North America’s history.
France, England and Spain claimed territories in the New World from the 1500s. In the wake of the Age of Enlightenment, English and Spanish colonies of North America won their independence and became the USA and México!
Nouvelle France faced a different destiny.
Through Franco-English conflicts and treaties, Louisiane was ceded to Spain, then back to France and purchased by the Americans. Thus, Cajuns and Creoles pursued their American dream.
However, French Acadie and Canada became British colonies. Despite this, Samuel de Champlain’s dream of a durable French presence goes on in the St. Lawrence Valley, cradle of Canada and heart of French-speaking America.

Michel walked us through 400 years of Quebec City history in the context of North American colonization. He is a walking encyclopedia, with passion and enthusiasm. Learn and experience the city. Top notch, thank you Michel.

Luis lead us on an excellent tour of Lower and upper Old Town Quebec. We asked him to talk about the history of the city with and emphasis on the interaction with the US. He very ably fulfilled our request. We walked for about 4 miles, including climbing to the upper city (our choice instead of funicular). We saw some interesting things we would have missed had we been on our own or in a large group tour. He is personable. His English is excellent. He met us at a convenient spot to our ship and ended in upper Quebec as we requested. We booked directly with Quebec 1608.

Quebec has a lot of general tours with guides in a tricorn hat or bonnet, but the tour I booked was very focused on the history of New France and Canada, and the relationship with the US – and no costume needed. My guide, Michel, is an historian who can take the bits that you know and work it into his narrative on the fly. You can only do that if you really know the subject matter. I previously had a vague outline of events, but now I benefit from both the words and the sights of the tour. I had a great time, a great conversation, and a great learning experience.

We had a great time on our walking tour with Michel Sirois! I am a travel agent and was leading a group of ladies on a New England/Canada cruise that ended in Quebec City, and this walking tour seemed like a perfect way to get an overview of the Old Town. Michel was kind, patient and gave us great history as we did the tour. He even took some of our group who wanted to down to the lower town on his way back to the ferry. In addition, I had mentioned in my communications with him prior to the trip that I was having issues securing a wheelchair for my mom who'd had a recent fall, and he took it upon himself to reserve a wheelchair for us at a pharmacy close to our hotel. (We ended up not needing it because our hotel did end up having one, but it was still a wonderful gesture.) He even helped me push the wheelchair several times up large hills or helped get mom over the curbs that weren't quite flush with the pavement. All in all, a great tour if you love history, and Michel S. goes above and beyond for his guests.

Michel is a wonderful tour guide and teacher. He brings many old maps and primary source materials to help illuminate the historical narrative. He has a fascinating family history reaching back 9 generations that also bring the history of Quebec to life. Michel was very responsive to our interests and tailored the tour to our tastes. Wonderful way to experience the city!

Michel has passion for Quebec City with great stories as we walked through lower and upper cities. He maintains a pace that remains comfortable while explaining the feelings of French Canadians dealing with British and the invading Continental Army of the American Revolution. He makes the city real and has first hand knowledge of all the key historic and cultural sites. He’s the best!

What an outstanding history tour of upper and lower Quebec City. Michel has so much relevant and interesting information to share, complete with illustrative materials and maps to keep us oriented, and easily shaped the tour to our interests. The walking route was completely comfortable for moderate activity, and we enjoyed every minute and some of his special access points as a local. We would recommend him AND call him again for another tour full of amazing historical anecdotes and interesting commentary.

Michel was our tour guide for my husband, sister, brother-in-law and I. He was very enthusiastic as he spoke about Quebec and its history. He had prepared maps and genealogy charts which he timed perfectly with his walking tour of the city. If you are interested in seeing Quebec and like history, I highly recommend Michel!

Michel, the owner of Tours Levi’s, was outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 hour tour, delving into so much French/British/American history. We walked the upper and lower old town, stopping often, and Michel brought so many of the pivotal events to life. History is his passion and he was skilled and charming at sharing it. Our teenage sons really enjoyed the tour. Fascinating, Michel’s own family history as a 10th generation Quebecquois, was woven into the complex and rich history of French America. This is a superb way of getting a 101 on why Quebec is such a key part of Canadian history, and the broader picture of North American colonialism. Highly recommended, hands-on from someone who knows chapter and verse of local history and loves sharing his knowledge of this special place. Thankyou Michel.
