Oshima tsumugi is a traditional Japanese silk fabric. The production process involves about 30-40 steps, from making the yarn to extracting the dye solution, and only after many years are they born. The delicate kasuri (pattern) dyed threads are woven one by one by the hand of weavers.

What To Expect
From the Kagoshima City tram street, walk towards the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal along Meizan Pier Street. Turn into the street just before Kagomma Onsen, and you will see a white apartment building. There is a sign with a banner for Amami Oshima Tsumugi kimono rentals.

5.00It was great to try a real kimono. They had a wide variety to choose from and Ikeda-san, the owner was very kind. It was very easy to communicate with her, and she was very nice to us. We got to choose the kimono and the obi we liked and we walked to a nearby park to take pictures outside. Unfortunately, the weather was not too good, but it was a lot of fun!

5.00The kimono-wearing experience was wonderful! The rental shop had a wide selection of patterns and colors, and the staff helped me choose a beautiful design and dressed me with such care. The dressing process was intricate but wearing a kimono was surprisingly comfortable, and so many people complimented the look. I highly recommend this experience!
