Peterhead Prison Museum
Our 5* Multi-Award winning visitor attraction is set within the former HM Convict Prison, Peterhead. Unique in many ways including being the only "Convict" prison in Scotland [to come here meant you were sentenced to "penal servitude"]; It had the first "state owned" railway in Britain; and it was the only time the Special Air Service were used to end a domestic siege on mainland UK when an officer was held hostage for 4 day's in 1987. All your senses will be teased as you walk the galleries and halls where you are surrounded by the visual, our award winning audio tour will bring you into moments in time as you listen to former officers tell their stories and your olfactory senses will be in overdrive at key locations on the route. Walk in the footsteps of former officers and inmates of "Scotland's Toughest Jail" often referred to as "Scotland's Alcatraz". This is a once in a life time experience and one that will live with you for many year's to come

We had a guided tour of the prison which was led by David who worked in the prison before it closed . He was absolutely amazing, he told us lots of history about the place as well as a few stories... I'm disabled and use a mobility scooter, David made sure that I still got to see as much as possible and my hubby took photos of the bits I couldn't get to. His knowledge of the prison is amazing. We would definitely recommend the guided tour...definitely worth the visit. The guy on the desk , Steven or Stuart I think was exceptionally helpful too, please accept my apologies at not remembering your name... Both full of smiles and clearly love to work there...Thank you for an awesome and amazing day.

A really interesting visit. The self guided tour is informative and engaging. Lots to have a look at. Family of 4, from mid 70's to 14, all enjoyed it. We took our dog, he was absolutely fine and welcomed by the staff, although that might have been more difficult if there were more people about ... We only saw 1 other set of visitors.

I first went to the Halloween experience in 2023 and the narrative performed by the actors was basically the prison was A Mental Asylum and there all sorts of characters and cases , it was performed fantastically and narrative and setting made sense . Unfortunately. 2025 had a pirate vibe and although very well acted it felt odd and there was no real story , and the real disappointment was how short it was compared to 2023 , honestly felt rushed . Started at 19:35 and finished at 20:00, would love to go again but please stretch it out a bit more and stick to a ghost story that makes sense

We went to the Halloween tour. It's the 4th time we've been. Gets better every year. The tour of the prison is also a great experience we'll worth a visit

The building has been maintained to a standard that gives you a real chill when you enter. Prison has always been a great fear and the atmosphere and stories confirmed that this was not somewhere you would have wanted to be a guest.

We went for the guided tour today. Our guide Davie made it a really interesting experience. Being able to ask questions and have him able to answer like he did was excellent. This tour is a must do to if you are in town. Just to add we had already done the tour a few years before using the headphones, but the guided tour was another level of experience.

Definitely worth a visit! Very interesting. I took my parents and my kids, they all thoroughly enjoyed the day out. The audio tour is very informative. All the staff were very welcoming and friendly, cafe is worth a visit. Lunch was delicious and very reasonably priced.
