Postojna Cave

Postojna Cave, the queen of all caves, is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world’s largest karst monuments. This is the only place in the world where the underground landscape can be traversed on an electric train and where you get to meet this underground kingdom’s most famous inhabitant – the proteus (olm) – up close. A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, astonishing diversity of karst features, as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for such popularity of the cave and a large number of visitors (more than 36 million of them in over 200 years).

In spite of a couple of blips beforehand (not giving the start time until the day before plus not seeing our change of email address), we enjoyed this trip very much. Ernest was an excellent guide, full of knowledge about the sites and also generally about Slovenia. We loved his pride in being Slovenian, a beautiful country which we love. The caves were amazing and the train trip in and out was great fun. Also the castle was incredible. Thank you Ernest, we had a great time!

Matthew from Koper was our guide. He picked us up promptly from Trieste. We had a lovely drive to the castle and then cave. He gave us interesting information about the region. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and Matthew was a good guide.

Photos on the Viator website, which are stunning, cannot fully capture the exterior beauty of the castle and its property. The interior was amazing. The audio guides were a great addition. The cave journey was beyond expectations. We’ve been to several on the US, but the magnificence of this one was overwhelming. A true wonder of nature! Definitely a “don’t miss” excursion!

We were picked up in front of the Savoia Hotel by Matias, our drive, who is Slovenian and speaks Slovene, Italian and English! The hour-long drive to Predjama Castle was beautiful; such a gorgeous country. The Predjama Castle was quite interesting and in a unique setting. Then onto Postojna Cave which was prodigious...HUGE. It was quite cool on the train so don't forget your jacket and good walking shoes.

The cave and the castle were both amazing....well worth the drive there. I just wish we had more time at the castle as it felt a bit rushed.

Small group was excellent. More personal and relaxed to Castle and caves. Plenty of time to enjoy the event. Well organized. Our young driver was excellent ( name began with A… can’t remember full name)
