Punalu'u Black Sand Beach
Start the adventure towards Hawaii Volcanoes National Park driving to Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach. Have you ever seen a beach with black sand? Because of constant volcanic activity, you'll find white sands and black sands on the island of Hawaiʻi. Located on the southeastern Kaʻū coast, Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach is one of the most famous black sand beaches in Hawaiʻi. Located between the towns of Pāhala and Nāʻālehu in Kaʻū, Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach's jet black shores are an unforgettable sight. Coconut palms fringe the upper edge of sand and you may also discover large honu, (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles), basking on the beach. Although it may be tempting, do not touch these protected turtles and do not remove any black sand from the beach. 90 minutes drive plus 30 minutes in the beach
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Born of Fire, Born of the Sea Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park protects some of the most unique geological, biological, and cherished cultural landscapes in the world. Extending from sea level to 13,680 feet, the park encompasses the summits of two of the world's most active volcanoes - Kīlauea and Mauna Loa - and is a designated International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will then make our way to the summit of Kilauea volcano at the Volcanoes National Park, the most highly regarded and revered volcanic area on Earth. The Park highlights two of the world's most active volcanoes--Kilauea and Mauna Loa--and offers insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and views of dramatic volcanic landscapes. At the park, you will stop at the Visitor Center, witness the spectacular collapsed caldera, steam vents, sulfur banks, and fascinating scenic lookouts. No trip to Hawaii is complete without a trip to Volcanoes National Park.

Our guide LJ was an unbelievable wealth of knowledge. He knew all the plants and animals and told a plethora of interesting stories. The drive from Kona to Volcanos National Park seemed like a blink due to LJ's story telling. He gave us plenty of time at each stop. I would absolutely book a private tour with this awesome guide any day!

It was ok. It would have been better if we had a cleaner car. It was so dirty. But Micheal, our guide was ok.

Our guide Bianca was not only an amazing individual who our daughter loved hanging with, she was also a fantastic and knowledgeable guide to the Big Island's natural features from the volcano crater, steam vents and lava tubes to tropical gardens and waterfalls. We had a great time and she knew lots of great shortcuts up in Volcanos Park.

We enjoyed Kona to Hilo with our fantastic guide Don! We stopped at every beach, black sand included, saw sea turtles and 100s of dolphins. We explored Volcano National Park, played in Steam Vents and Lava Tubes. We explored the town of Hilo and Wailuku River State Park to climb trees, walk in the river and observe the massive waterfall! We stopped at Punalu’u Bake Shop for incredible Malasadas. The entire day was scenic and Don was a fantastic resource and conversationalist.

We had an epic adventure! Dramma was an amazing guide! We explored rainbow falls, the lavatube, fissure 8, the beach, got to see the Banyan tree Amelia Earhart planted, a super neat farmers market with the best shaved ice, 7-11 (which is definitely an experience!) & even cow cuddling! 🤯 an amazing super cool day topped with Dramma’s sweet vibes, impeccable music, & the aloha spirit ❤️

This was a great way to get to know the Big Island early in our trip here. Our guide Michael was fun to be with, an excellent source of local information, and a great guide. We saw everything from coastal topography, the mountains, waterfalls, Volcanoes National Park (had a great lunch there), a black sand beach, and sites around Hilo including the Japanese Gardens and a local photo artist that had beautiful pictures of Kilauea erupting (bought one to take home). This is a tour we definitely recommend doing...and be sure to ask for Michael as your guide!

Guide was friendly and knowledgeable but the tour was not as advertised. Did not include tour of black sand beaches or Volcanoes National Park. Very disappointing and not worth the cost

Dramma was our tour guide. She was fantastic. We booked a private tour. She modified nicely for us and packed in an amazing amount of stuff. We switched to the Hilo only tour because that is what we wanted, she was super flexible. Great information and too many fabulous views to count. Downtown Hilo (coffee, chocolate, volcano eruption photography artist, fruit market, fun shops), sunning sea turtles, black sand beach, Rainbow Falls, massive mango trees, huge Banyan tree, Volcano National park (steam vents, stunning views of the caldera, and lava tube walk!) Our guide gave us fantastic information and was brilliant with accommodating everyone’s interests. Definitely worthwhile!
