This is a unique opportunity to visit the home of a local and explore traditional culture and cuisine. be welcomed into Lorette and Desmond’s beautiful home in Grassy Park, built by Lorette's dad 44 years ago. Lorette bought the home from her parents when she and Desmond married and they redesigned and renovated their home themselves. After a welcome drink, join Lorette in her spacious, modern kitchen for your South African Cape Malay cooking class. Lorette is also a keen gardener and loves using fresh herbs from her garden to cook her meals. You can expect to learn how to make 2-3 of the dishes which might include mini roti's with chicken curry (the Cape Malay roti is a delicious unleavened flatbread served with chicken curry), bobotie (a South African dish of curried minced meat baked with a savory custard served with aromatic yellow rice and roasted vegetables) and malva pudding. The cooking class portion of the experience will last between 1-2 hours before you share the meal you helped prepare over conversation with Lorette and Desmond. This was such an awesome experience, I absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting Cape Town. We cooked the best meal we had on our entire vacation (butter chicken is my new favorite dish) and just had an all-around excellent time. Do this cooking class! You won't regret it!

Working with Aashi at Traveling Spoon was great. She was efficient, timely and honest. I hope to work with her more often. Our experience cooking with Lorette and meeting her family was AWESOME. A definite highlight of our Cape Town visit. Lorette is a fabulous cook, her home is warm and inviting, she is a kind and patient teacher and lots of fun. Everyone in my group of 9 persons loved, loved the experience. They can’t wait to try her recipe of African traditional dishes at home.

Spending our evening with Lorette was amazing. Her warm hospitality and experience with African recipes was exactly what we were looking for. She invited us into her beautiful home graciously and we shared so many wonderful stories. We prepared chicken curry, roti and malva pudding. The food was a 10/10 and the roti was a 12/10. The aromas filled the kitchen and it was a perfect evening. We chose her because of her 5 star reviews and our expectations were exceeded.

Relaxing way to spend a few hours and learn a few recipes. Our host was friendly and informative, happy to chat about cooking and living in the cape area. Having cooked a few simple dishes we got to enjoy them over an equally relaxing lunch.
