What To Expect
Paphos Gate
Option 1: The Paphos Gate was one of three entrances through the Venetian walls that surrounded the entire city of Nicosia. These walls were constructed in 1567 by the renowned architect Giulio Savorgnano. Just outside the Paphos Gate, a road begins, leading southwest towards Paphos – the city that gave the gate its name. The Paphos Gate was also once known as the “Gate of Saint Dominic,” as it replaced an older gate from the Frankish wall called the “Porta di San Domenico,” named after the nearby Abbey of San Domenico. The Paphos Gate is a simple opening in the wall, covered by a barrel vault.
Option 2 – More time in the South We’ll drive straight into the southern part of the Old Town and take a bit more time there. This includes the historic border crossing point known as “Checkpoint Charlie” and a visit to the beautiful Panayia Phaneromeni Orthodox Church.

5.00Anyone who wants to take a tour to Nicosia, the old town, with border crossing ... I would definitely recommend this tour. The whole tour was just perfect. I was picked up directly at my accommodation and delivered there again. The tour guide Jürgen was very nice, competent, accommodating,.... has completely responded to my wishes and ideas of the tour. He took and gave me the time to watch and explore everything according to my pace. All completely without stress and time pressure. This opportunity to book the tour just for myself was just perfect. 5.00Jürgen is a fascinating guide. He picked me up on time as agreed and we drove to Nicosia. First we had a good look at the old city wall from the “south” side and looked over the “no-man’s land” area before parking up and walking through the streets - eventually into the main shopping street. One part of this could be almost anywhere in a city - but then we cross Paphos Gate through into the Northern part (passport required!) and the difference is clear. We explored some fascinating areas - and discussed the history. I’m not a big shopper (but if you are there are plenty of fascinating shops) but that meant we had time to get some lunch and Jürgen knew a great place to go. Very glad to have done this - seen some great sights / sites and understood more about the recent history (something I remember from the news in my younger days). Thank you!
