We will start with a brief introduction of the geographical and cultural origin of this music and a demonstration of some of its rhythms, which includes Bunde, Currulao, Rumba, and Juga among others. We will embark on a unique musical journey through the instruments used in the villages of the rural Pacific Coast of Colombia. These traditional instruments include the Marimba de Chonta, the Cununos and Bombos, the Guasá and the Voices. We will show you how the alluring sounds of each instrument create a beautiful polyrhythmic texture when played together. No musical experience is required as we will explore these rhythms in a fun and accessible collective dynamic.
We will also have the opportunity to enjoy some of the flavors of the Pacific prepared by the expert hands of a chef form the region. The taste of the sea and the sweet earthiness of the viche, a local sugar cane liquor will transport us, along with the music to Pacific Coast, making this a unique multi-sensory experience!

We recommend this for everyone!!! Adrian cared deeply about the cultural context and histories of the music, and ensured that before we touched the instruments, that we had a foundational understanding of the people and regions from which the music came. They all took great care to make us feel included in the music making, and to give us as authentic an experience as possible. They were all very helpful and kind when teaching us rhythms and helping us when we got off. The food was incredible as well. We started our trip to Bogota with this experience and I think it was the perfect plan. Thank you Adrian and team!

This was such a treat! I really enjoyed not only learning about but also getting to try Afro-Colombian music. I'm a professional musician and Adrian adjusted what he was teaching to keep me on my toes. And the booze was great!

Adrian Sabogal and the various masters he invites from the Pacific coast inspire participants to find the rhythm from within. By creating a circular call and response workshop all participants are able to play every single instrument while singing and learning about the traditions of this African Diasporic culture. You enter the workshop thinking you are going to learn how to play an instrument and you leave the workshop completely immerse in the culture and transformed from the inside out with these magical rhythms. I highly recommend anyone, even non musicians, to experience Marimbea and let yourself be transformed too!!

Adrian provides a truly amazing and unique experience. He is very attentive and communicative. It is not only about music but I also learned about Adrian's background and source of passion as well as about history of Afrocolombians with delicious snacks and drinks. You can be as tonedeff as I am and still participate and play some cool music.

I did the workshop in Bogotá with my team and it was an unforgettable experience for everyone! The music, the food, the stories, the energy, every detail thought to have a pleasant afternoon and get carried away with the music. None had musical knowledge and we managed to make it sound very good! We had fun and it was a different activity than the traditional lunch. Highly recommended

This workshop seemed like a very Bakan way to approach the culture of our Colombian Pacific and share with others who want to learn the same language. Personally, I found that I love touching the crib and that it’s a very liberating thing, and I believe that each person can find valuable things in this experience according to their inner concerns.

This workshop is for all levels, including people who cannot play any musical instruments! This is my case, and I can tell you that the workshop is developed in a very playful and very loose format. It is not only focused on the marimba, but this is the central instrument, and the group of attendees must rotate using all the instruments that are part of the ensemble, giving them the opportunity to experiment, learn about some traditions and music of the Colombian pacific and to reconnect with that musical side that we all have inside! Super recommended!
