All of our private charters are unique and customized to the interests of the guests... from bird watchers, to sunbathers, snorkelers, photographers, divers, cocktail connoisseurs, food enthusiasts, folks seeking the “best of” the islands to casual fun boaters just looking to just enjoy the breeze and some time on the water.
A “typical day” might include swimming, snorkeling, sightseeing, beaching, cliff jumping, lunch, hiking, history, story telling, music, dancing and more. Guests are welcome to visit the popular spots people often talk about, mentioned in guidebooks, on social media, etc... but also encouraged to explore tons of lesser visited places that have yet to go “mainstream.”

What To Expect
From 3:45 to sunset, our AFTERNOON/EVENING trip through the "Golden Hours" allows time for 1-2 snorkels, island/beach hoping, scenic boating, cock-tailing, optional dinner from the floating pizza boat, Pizza Pi, and of course a beautiful Virgin Island sunset.

5.00My husband and I booked the sunset cruise. Our captain Troy was able to pick us up right on the beach at our resort. He was very knowledgeable about the islands, their history and all of the interesting sites in the area. The boat was great and we couldn’t have asked for a better trip. We would recommend these guys to anyone for sure.

5.00Ivan did provided our group with a phenomenal boating excursion! This was some of our groups first foray into snorkeling and he delivered an amazing experience! We did three snorkeling stops, an excellent pizza boat dinner stop and an absolutely stunning sunset photo op ! Ivan was informative, funny and super helpful with any assistance or questions we had! He had reached out to us as soon as we had booked the trip to determine our needs and did the same upon pickup - which made it feel more intimate and tailored to our groups desires. I would recommend this charter boat company and definitely Captain Ivan for an amazing experience! Thank you !

5.00We had such an amazing time with Capt Ivan on a sunset cruise. He is the perfect mix of helpful, informative and fun. Best adventure of this vacation so far. Pizzi pi for dinner was awesome! How do they make pizza better than anyone at home on a boat??!! A large eagle ray breached the water beside the boat while we were getting our food. Wow!! Ivan was so helpful with our beginning snorkelers. He helped us find the turtles at Maho and snuck in as much water time as possible. Highly recommend Ivan and Island Roots. Sunset cruise was amazing but I would definitely do a full day!

5.00The best thing we did on the island. We booked the first day upon arrival with Captain Max. He was fantastic with our kids and made it a great way to kickoff the trip. In fact, we loved it so much we booked again to close out our trip with Captain Ivan. He went above and beyond to make our last night memorable. Thank you!!!

5.00The golden hours tour with captain nick was the highlight of our trip! We went to two snorkel spots and saw tons of fish and starfish. We were even able to snag a last minute pizza from the pizza pi boat!! Would definitely be using island root charters and captain nick on our next trip!

5.00Captain Jason was great! Booking was easy, meeting him on the day of the trip was easy. He made the trip fun for everyone! Great snorkel, good pizza and an amazing sunset! Boat was clean and very comfortable. Could not have been better.

5.00We booked our the Golden Hours sunset cruise for the first full day of our visit to StJohn. It was a great way to see the island and get our bearings for the week ahead. Captain Ryan was a terrific guide and provided a lot of knowledge and insight about STJ like only a local can. Pizzapi was delicious and the owners are wonderful people. Enjoyed eating our slice of pizza while watching the breathtaking sunset. A great start to our week in paradise!

5.00Our family of seven's private Sunset Cruise with Captain Ryan Granger was a highlight of our recent trip to St. John. The boat is clean and comfortable, and Ryan had everything on hand (snorkel gear, iced down waters, a nice speaker system to play our music, even a book on reef fish for our snorkeling enthusiasts) to make for a wonderful evening. Ryan tailored the outing to our tastes, bringing us to two great snorkeling spots (including one where we spotted our first sea turtle!) and a deserted island with two options for cliff jumping for my 25-year-old son (who caught the bug after jumping at Cleetwood Cove in Crater Lake NP last year). He pointed out wild goats on another deserted island as well as other points of interest, such as the abandoned Caneel Bay Resort and Lovango. As a long-time resident, Ryan was knowledgeable about life on St. John and a friendly conversationalist. He texted early the morning of our excursion asking about our dinner preferences so he could place an order with Pizza Pi early in the day. We met up with that boat around 5:45 and enjoyed a great pizza dinner on the water. We spent the last 30 minutes or so of our time cruising through the Caribbean with fantastic sunset views. We would do this again, and if we'd had more time we would've done a full day tour with Island Roots as well. Highly recommend!

5.00Been to several islands and done several charters, including others in St. John but our trip this time with Island Roots was one of the best experiences we’ve had on the water. We did a half day snorkel/sunset that actually picked us up in St Thomas since we were going to ferry over to St John anyways. Captain Jason called us before hand and was super accommodating with the logistics. Captain Ryan was right on time and made us and our teenage daughters feel like VIPs. The boat was fairly new and in excellent condition. Captain Ryan took us to an amazing snorkel spot we had to ourselves and was very informative about the area and the marine life. He then took us to Pizza Pi and timed the sunset perfectly. Truly the highlight of our trip. Can’t wait to book again with Jason and Ryan and Island Roots.
