What To Expect
Altun Ha
This tour will take you to visit a Mayan ruin where you can learn about a great civilization that inhabited Belize over 3,000 years ago. Journey through the Mayan underworld, tubing through underground caves over 175,000 years old as your headlights reveal many untouched crystal formations below the surface of the earth. Altun Ha was first settled somewhere around 250 BC, with construction of the buildings beginning in 100 AD and continuing throughout the Classic Period that ended in the 10th century. Some 10,000 Maya lived in and around Altun Ha, which was a significant trading center as evidenced by the large amounts of jade and obsidian excavated here in the early sixties and seventies.
Caves Branch
Cave tubing provides thrills to suit nearly any age and fitness level. After a brief 30-minute hike to the entrance of the cave, inner tubes are used to float along the Caves Branch River. See your light flicker upon strange shapes and the ultimate darkness beyond. Hear the echo of your own voice bounce off the distant walls. Listen to the water dripping from the ceiling, creating spectacular formations in the stunning chambers. And while you might be expecting dark and claustrophobic passageways, you are likely to find enormous chambers and cathedral-sized rooms.

5.00Our family excursion in Belize was the highlight of our cruise. Our extraordinary guide Peter and driver Dorian made the experience truly special. The cave tubing adventure began with a scenic 30-minute jungle hike along a well-maintained trail, easily manageable for almost anyone. Peter's knowledge and enthusiasm brought the cave system to life as we floated peacefully through the crystal-clear waters for 20 minutes, taking in the magnificent limestone formations. After the refreshing cave experience, we drove north to explore ancient Mayan ruins. The combination of underground cave systems and historical ruins made for an ideal blend of adventure and cultural exploration. This excursion perfectly suited our family with older children, offering both excitement and educational value. Highly recommend this tour for families with kids who can handle some light hiking!

5.00Wayne (the general) was very accommodating and entertaining. The tubing is very gentle. Wayne provided bug spray which was definitely needed and appreciated. Very comfortable car. There are changing rooms and showers at the caves, bring a change of clothes and a towel. Lunch was provided at a cafe at the caves, served a classic belize meal, was good.

5.00Dorian picked us up at the airport & chauffeured us in a comfortable air conditioned car. He was friendly & knowledgeable about the county itself, the culture, & the Mayans. He walked the grounds of Altun Ha with us, taking our pictures, & telling us all kinds of history. The cave tubing was amazing! Our guide was hilarious & down to earth. He took us on a short hike through the jungle & then safely guided us down the river. He was very knowledgeable as well about the cave system & the country as well. The traditional Belizean lunch afterwards was absolutely delicious! Dorian also stopped for us to try some traditional homemade cashew wine! Couldn’t have asked for better guides!

5.00Paul was waiting for us right outside cruise terminal as indicated. He happily agreed to a small change of plans with us, and we were on our way. The caves are a magnificent experience, and Paul was excellent to allow us to enjoy the peacefullness and tranquility of the ride. I would have liked to know that there are 9 caves! We of course only did 1 because of the schedule, but if you plan ahead, ask to do at least 2. They are fantastic. Paul showed us around town and was great to chat with. We really enjoyed our day and would recommend Paul and Private Belize Tours for sure!

5.00This was the only tour that offered both Cave tubing and Mayan ruins. It is a very private tour, just me and my partner. You have to drive fast to make it to adventures, but our driver Dorian had no problem with that. The cave tubing did require a further walk than expected, but was worth it in the end. Wear swim shoes, don’t attempt barefoot! ((If you have trouble walking, this is probably not a good idea for you.)) Flacco was an excellent guide through the cave. We really liked him a lot. The Altun Ha site was awesome. It’s a very open site, so wear sunscreen. It was all worth doing. Beware, to get to port requires a water taxi. The ship (Carnival) didn’t let us leave until their ship’s tours were already departed. It took a whole hour from the time we go on taxi boat, to the time it left ship and arrived at the port. Then, at the last minute, they informed us that we had to be back by 3:15. That gave us only 6 hours for the entire tour. Call your cruise line and ask what time you can actually arrive at land and what time you have to board taxi to get back. Our ship said we got to port at 8am and departed at 5pm. But the reality was we got to port at 9am and had to leave by 3:15pm. Thankfully our private driver took good care of us.

5.00The Altun Ha and cave tubing tour was great. Juan and Paul took good care of us and made our day enjoyable. We initially planned to see the ruins first then go tubing, but they were aware of a large group coming off a cruise ship so they asked if we wanted to switch the order of things so we would have less crowding. We took their advice and had an exceptional time. Lunch was provided between the excursions (we were served the Belizean national dish and were not disappointed). Paul gave us lots of information on the history of Belize and the sites we visited. Our guides were patient with us and when we ignored their repeated warnings about missing the ferry (whoops) they added a stop at a rum factory to keep us entertained and minimize a boring wait for the next one (for context, corralling our group of nine was like herding cats). This excursion is best for folks who are able to tolerate long van rides that can sometimes be bumpy and/or winding, walking on uneven surfaces and climbing into/out of a tube on a river. The care we received from this tour company was exceptional and I highly recommend them.
