Kaminarimon Gate
The Kaminarimon Gate in Asakusa is one of Tokyo’s most famous landmarks, standing as the grand entrance to Senso-ji Temple, the city’s oldest and most significant Buddhist temple. Its official name is Fūraijinmon, named after the Shinto gods of wind (Fūjin) and thunder (Raijin), whose large statues guard the gate. The gate’s massive red lantern is an iconic symbol of Asakusa, weighing over 700 kg. What many people overlook is the dragon carving underneath the lantern, a hidden detail symbolizing protection and good fortune. Kaminarimon is a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and the lively energy of modern Tokyo, making it a must-see on any walking tour of Asakusa.
Nakamise Shopping Street (Kaminarimon)
Beyond the gate, visitors enter Nakamise-dori, a vibrant shopping street that has served pilgrims and tourists for centuries, offering traditional snacks, souvenirs, and local crafts.

What an unforgettable day! Our tour through Asakusa was nothing short of amazing, thanks to our incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide. We began at the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate)—a stunning introduction to the district, guarded by the powerful Shinto gods Fujin and Raijin. Walking through the historic Nakamise-dori, with nearly 90 traditional stalls dating back to the Edo period, felt like stepping into a living museum. Every turn offered charming souvenirs, snacks, and centuries-old atmosphere. Next, we reached the imposing Hozomon Gate, guarded by the fierce Niō statues and housing treasures above. Passing through led us to the heart of it all: Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest and most iconic Buddhist temple. The spiritual energy and architectural beauty here were unforgettable. No trip to Asakusa would be complete without a stop at Kagetsudo—their melonpan lived up to the hype and then some! Afterward, we wandered through the lively Hoppy Street, lined with cheerful izakaya and full of local flavor. Our guide even brought us to Rokku Broadway, once a center of kabuki theater, adding a touch of cultural depth to the tour. We wrapped up our adventure at the scenic Azuma Bridge, with breathtaking views of the Sumida River and the iconic Asahi Beer headquarters gleaming in the sunset. If you’re looking for a rich blend of history, culture, food, and fun—this is the tour to take. Highly recommended!
