There are over a dozen colorful wooden houses are squeezed up against the towering Marriot and the Hilton Hotels. The concept, in the early 1970s, was that dilapidated buildings bred ragged people. After World War II, most cities demolish thousands of "blighted" urban areas across the nation. Most were replaced by high-rise apartments, shopping malls, and hotels. In Portsmouth, we lost much of historic Vaughan Street and replaced it with a parking garage and open lots. We will pass by a collection of preserved historic homes saved by urban renewal and move into this area for preservation.

We loved this bike tour. It was the highlight of our trip. The views were amazing. We rode along the water and made frequent stops so our guide, Paul, could fill us in on the history of the town. It was such a fun day. I highly recommend Port City!

Had a fantastic ride with Paul who is so knowledgeable about the area history. We live in mostly flat Florida and the ride was not hard. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend.

This tour was canceled last minute leaving me with nothing to do and no time to schedule something else. I can’t speak to the tour itself as I didn’t get to go.

Highly recommend! Really fun to learn about how the area changed and some of the people who worked to keep the history of the city alive. We are locals and we learned a lot about Portsmouth! We rode with Dawn and she was excellent!
