Glossophagian or nectar-eating bats use their echo-location system to search for flowers with nectar even in the absence of light. Some flowers only open their petals at night, with the bat being its most important pollinator. This example of a symbiotic reproduction-food relationship is part of the magic that can be observed on a night tour. Like the bat, much of the biodiversity of the rainforest has nocturnal habits. Their adaptations have allowed them to survive in a world without light, obtaining advantages over their competition for food-gathering, and protecting them from their light-dependent predators. Frogs with charming sounds and colors, sloths, insects, and even snakes can be enjoyed at this wonderful rainforest night party.

I have nothing but positive things to say. We booked this tour while staying at Tabacon Resort in the Arenal area (my husband and I with our two 7-year-old boys). Diego, our guide, and his driver picked us up at the hotel (right on time) and drove us to a private farm property. During the drive, he told us about the species we'd be hoping to see, complete with photos. We arrived and began with a small snack at the farm's outdoor restaurant (fruit and cheese tortillas with sour cream). After that the real fun began; we were provided with flashlights and we followed Diego on foot through the rain forest on a narrow trail. It had just rained (which is good apparently!), so we were lucky and saw 4-5 red-eye tree frogs, glass frogs, millipedes, huge spiders, a blue-jeans frog, toads, masked frogs, stream-side frogs, leaf-cutter ants, lizards, and more! Definitely wear long pants and sleeves for the bugs, but we did and it was fine. It was exactly what we hoped for! Thank you Jacamar and Diego!!

Marco was incredible! He was so knowledgeable about all of the wildlife and helped us get great pictures. Would recommend wearing hiking gear if you have it - or at least longer pants and good boots/sneakers. The path is well-groomed but you'll still brush by lots of foliage and insects on the ground.

Snacks were provided at the beginning. We assumed some chips or something but instead got delicious home made empanadas with Costa Rica’s favorite sauce. The tour was about two hours in the jungle. If you love amphibians and reptiles, this is for you. Marco, our guide, knew exactly where to look and found us many different animals. As the name suggests, you’ll get the opportunity to see animals you normally wouldn’t see on other tours. I always wanted to see wild dart frogs and a red eyed tree frog, we were lucky enough to see both early on in the tour. This was one of my favorite experiences on our trip and certainly unforgettable and unique.

Nelson was able to show us fauna of the undergrowth but also high above! We saw a share of unique amphibians, insects, and other arthropods! Nelson knew so many life histories and it was fantastic to learn- we would do it all over if we could!

This was a nice tour. it rained really hard when we arrived but we had some empanadas before we went out and the rain stopped and it was a little scary because it was pitch black and we just had flashlights. It wasn’t my favorite tour but it was a good one, we did everything with Jacamar and really were impressed by all the tour guides knowledge!

A very authentic and different experience and above all a pleasure to be able to count on the experience of Carlos, who knows a lot about all types of flora and fauna and has given us an unforgettable time. Thank you! Totally recommended!
