This experience combines off-road ATV riding with one of Iceland’s most unique food traditions. Ride through the volcanic landscapes of the Hengill region, crossing historic lava fields and active geothermal areas, before stopping to taste traditional Icelandic rye bread.
What sets this tour apart is how the bread is made. The rúgbrauð is baked in an oven heated entirely by natural geothermal energy, without electricity, using heat from the earth itself. During the stop, you will see geothermal activity up close and learn how this natural heat is used for cooking.
With a choice of 1-hour or 2-hour tours, this experience combines adventure, geology, renewable energy, and local food culture in one tour just outside Reykjavík.

A valid driver’s license is required to drive an ATV.
Please be at Litla Kaffistofan at least 15 minutes prior to departure.
What To Expect
Your experience begins at Litla Kaffistofan, about 20 minutes from Reykjavík. After a safety briefing, you will be provided with insulated overalls, helmet, and gloves before setting off on an ATV into the Hengill geothermal region. You will ride across the Svínahraun lava field, formed around the year 1000 AD, following gravel tracks through rugged lava covered in moss. The route continues into an active geothermal area with visible steam vents. You will pass the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant, where underground heat is used to produce electricity and hot water. Your guide will explain how geothermal energy is used in Iceland. The tour includes a stop in the Hveradalir geothermal area, where you will taste traditional Icelandic rúgbrauð (rye bread) baked in an oven heated by geothermal energy, without electricity. You will also see geothermal activity up close. Please remain on marked paths. Depending on the option selected, the tour will either remain in the Hengill area (1-hour option) or continue deeper into the landscape (2-hour option), including Jósepsdalur valley and views of Vífilsfell volcano. The tour ends back at Litla Kaffistofan.

5.00What a fun experience! We drove an ATV on black sand beaches, saw the U.S. Navy plane that crashed 50 years ago, and proceeded to a beautiful canyon. Our tour guide Jorby was professional, helpful, and informative about the area, its history and geology. Thanks for a great tour!

5.00It was the best tour with Jordy! First you get your suits and a security briefing before the tour takes place. As soon as it starts the fun part begins! Jordy takes care of everyone and was also explaining us a bit about the volcanos which wear close. The trip ended in a beautiful canyon before we got back to the camp. It’s a really nice tour! We recommend it!
