Robben Island Museum
Robben island is one of the most popular attractions in Cape town. Embarking on a ferry from Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V & A Waterfront, you will disembark at Murray’s Bay Harbor, east coast of the Island. The latter’s fauna -such as the African Penguins- and flora -such as fynbos- are unique and remarkable. The views of Table Mountain and the city below are spectacular. The bus will transport you to all the historical sites around the Island. You will learn the Island’s multi-layered +500-year-old history from sea voyagers who used it a refueling station and a place of refuge to being used as a banishment place for those regarded as outcasts and troublemakers. The tour route ends at the Maximum-Security Prison -now a museum- where many South Africa’s freedom fighters were incarcerated for years. The tour culminates with a viewing of Nelson Mandela’s cell. After the tour, you will embark on the ferry back to V&A Waterfront. A memorable experience worth visiting.

Traveling alone allowed me to absorb every detail. Robben Island was haunting and necessary. The Waterfront gave me space to reflect, surrounded by music, art, and sea air.

As history students, we were deeply moved by the Robben Island tour. Walking through the prison cells and hearing stories from former inmates made the struggle for freedom feel immediate and personal. The V&A Waterfront added a vibrant contrast—an ideal space to reflect and discuss.
