Bookings available for groups of 2 to 6 people.

The beach is perfect for spending the rest of the day there with friends and family. Bring snacks, drinks and good footwear.

What To Expect

4 person minimum group size. The sessions last for 2hr 30 mins depending on group size. To begin there is a short 5 minute walk along the beach from the car park to the rock cliff. We will then have a safety brief then harness and helmet up then get climbing! There is plenty of climbing routes up the cliff for all levels of difficulties. I'll be teaching some climbing moment and how to belay your partner up the wall safely. If you're getting fatigue from climbing then I can set up guided abseil through the roof of the cave also. When the session is finished you're more than welcome to bring along a picnic or BBQ and make the most of the beach and the stunning location with the family and friends. A really good mix of being challenging yet fun and a reassuring friendly instructor - just what we were looking for. Our Instructor was Daniel James Johnston and the climb was at Powillimount Beach. We were a small group of adults and children and a mixture of complete beginners and some experience. The children had done some indoor climbing and we were looking for somewhere to try outdoor climbing. We found Daniel online and his reviews all looked good. I’m so glad we booked it as we all thoroughly enjoyed it and an outdoor climb definitely feels more exciting than climbing walls. It was March and the weather wasn’t great but it didn’t stop us having a really good time. It was cold and we even had hail and snow at various points in the afternoon! However, Daniel was well prepared and had lit a campfire ready for us when we arrived. We kept this going the whole time so that anyone not climbing could keep warm. (The kids also enjoyed toasting marshmallows as a bonus!) Personally (as a complete novice) I found the climb quite challenging but loved the feeling of achievement. Daniel’s guidance and encouragement was definitely a big factor in me reaching the top! We finished off by abseiling through the gap in the rock formation, which was easier and good fun. There’s a great view from the top, and you can see the square Southerness lighthouse – currently the second oldest lighthouse in Scotland – along the coast. We had a brilliant morning climbing with Daniel. My husband, kids (11 & 13) all absolutely loved it. Daniel is a great teacher - really calm & reassuring & when my son was almost ready to give up, just short of the top of the second climb, Daniel encouraged him & he managed to get to the top! My almost 5 year old also had a go & Daniel was great with her too. Daniel’s two friendly dogs were a bonus! Great views & the beach was idyllic. A great experience which I would recommend to anyone!

Daniel was absolutely brilliant. His calm and confident approach allowed even the nervous group members to succeed. We had a large group with mixed abilities and this was handled very professionally to ensure that everyone got the most from the session. He was also very flexible to accommodate the unpredictable Scottish weather. Go ahead, book it now, you won't be disappointed. P.S. the beach is lovely and you get some great views from the top looking across to the lake district.

Brilliant taster session, fantastic setting, thoroughly enjoyed the climbing! Daniel was an excellent coach, very relaxed and informative, helped us all climb way more than we thought we could 👍 Would absolutely recommend and I'm looking upthe options at climbing centres near me 😁

Daniel was absolutely fantastic throughout making this such a fun family day for us all. As a group of teenagers and parents, we had a variety of abilities but Daniel managed to provide us all with a challenge enabling us all to push ourselves to succeed with his continual encouragement. The setting was stunning on a beach made of shells. The perfect family activity made so enjoyable by Daniel.

Dan provided an amazing experience, rock climbing on a natural cliff by the sea. There were a number of different difficulty levels to suit everyone. All with Dan’s expertise and tuition. All very safe but challenging. Great dogs too! I’d highly recommend to anyone.

Daniel took our two teenagers climbing for their time ever today. They loved it. He explained everything really well and was excellent with them. Had an amazing few hours! Well worth it! Location is absolutely amazing!

It's not often my teenage son agrees on a day out with his old dad (and the dog), but this was it. Daniel really made this come together by being not just friendly, but relatable and encouraging to me and my son both climbing the rock faces. After the the rock climbing with Daniel, we stayed at this little gem of a beach for a few more hours. Brilliant.

A massive recommendation from us for Dan. He took our 3 boys (aged 8-10) for their first ever rock climbing experience. He clearly knows every nook and cranny of the area and is passionate / massively experienced in climbing. Everything from start to finish was great and our boys now can’t wait to go again. Daniel explained everything, looked after us, and taught us some basics of rock climbing. We felt very safe. Attractive spot to do something different for a couple of hours. Really great fun!
