Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral
Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral, built in the late 1880s by French colonists, is one of the few remaining strongholds of Catholicism in the largely Buddhist Vietnam. Located in Paris Square, the name Notre Dame was given after the installation of the statue ‘Peaceful Notre Dame’ in 1959. In 1962, the Vatican conferred the Cathedral status as a basilica and gave it the official name of Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. Measuring almost 60 metres in height, the cathedral’s distinctive neo-Romanesque features include the all-red brick façade (which were imported from Marseille), stained glass windows, two bell towers containing six bronze bells that still ring to this day, and a peaceful garden setting in the middle of downtown Ho Chi Minh City District 1.
Central Post Office
The Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh is a beautifully preserved remnant of French colonial times and perhaps the grandest post office in all of Southeast Asia. Located next door to Notre Dame Cathedral, the two cultural sites can be visited together and offers visitors a chance to imagine life in Vietnam during the times of the Indochinese Empire. The building was designed by Alfred Foulhoux and features arched windows and wooden shutters, just as it would have in its heyday in the late 19th Century.

This was a wonderful introduction to Ho Chi Minh City with stops at the Chinese Market, Ba Thien Hau Pagoda, the Independence Palace and other sites. Lunch at Ngon 138 Restaurant was absolutely delicious. It was also interesting to see everyday life in the city as we drove in the comfort if our air conditioned van. Our guide, Harry (Tien), was very knowledgeable, helpful and especially friendly. His commentary made the entire day very enjoyable. Most importantly, Harry adapted the itinerary to meet our group’s specific needs and ensured that we returned to the cruise terminal in Phu My at exactly the time we requested. Harry was a joy to spend the day with and made our visit to Ho Chi Minh City memorable.

Our wonderful guide, Anna, met us at the terminal and took us to the Notre Dame Cathedral of VietNam, also, under renovation and expansion . Next we went to The Central post office. Both the Cathedral and post office were built while the French ruled . Both facilities are simply beautiful. Anna explained the War museum. Very emotional. But again Anna never stopped providing not only current info but shared a lot of history. We could only drive by the Independence Palace as it was closed due to the Cambodian minister being In attendance for meetings. And security was high! We then drove to a fascinating enamel facility. Anna was great in helping us understand the complete process. We were instructed as to all of the enamel steps/process but the variants as well. Simply beautiful. Wish I had tons of money to purchase true works of arts. Without a doubt this side of the world has such creative, unusual and beautiful pieces of art. We drove by the Saigon Opera House ( built by The French). Lovely. We then went to the tallest building ( 49 floors up at which point my ears popped several times). Got a few good pics. Anna asked if we wanted to stop for tea or coffee. We chose tea. Very flavorful! Anna asked what kind of lunch we would prefer. We told her rice rather than noodles. Our Lunch was at a very small local restaurant. A dish of chicken and rice and pork with rice and a seaweed soup and a cabbage soup. Was really very good. Love doing local foods. We later had a Vietnam pizza interesting and tasty. We then drove to Vietnam’s Chinatown. It Is a whole community or neigjborhood. Anna, our guide walked us through the flower markets. It was truly beautiful. Fresh flowers to be purchased for retail markets but street after street. And of course locals come for a huge bouquet of flowers for $10.00. All during our ‘walk’ Anna, was a constant source of local information. We went to the Ba Thien Hau Temple and then drove by the Ben Thanh Matket ( probably going there tomorrow. ) Finishing with the Jade Emperor Pagoda which was so cool as I remember an Amazing Race segment that included this temple. We finished by going through some local neighborhoods which were really interesting. Without a doubt Anna was such a highly educated young lady that not only loved her job but was happy to share so much and yet put our requests and priorities first. She repeated how we needed to be happy with our tour. She not only loves what she does but is extremely good at providing the best tour! Thank you, Anna… Enjoy the pics.

I had a wonderful time today exploring the beautiful and historic sites of Ho Chi Minh City. My tour driver, Mr. Tuan, and tour guide, Mr. Hao, picked me up at the Siagon Cruise Port right on time, and both were very friendly and welcoming. Mr. Hao was an excellent guide and described the sites as they pertain to the history and culture of Vietnam. We visited the war museum, Chinese Pagoda, Chinatown market, Presidential Palace, and other attractions. We had a very nice lunch with a street side vendor and returned to the port. By the end of the tour, I was made to feel like family. Mr. Tuan and Mr. Hao did everything possible to make me feel relaxed and comfortable. I highly recommend this tour.

Liam was a great guide. He gave us a comprehensive two day tour of Saigon and the Mekong Delta. He had a great sense of humor, which made for a fun experience He has a good command of English and when we were not able to understand due to his pronunciation, he would spell a word so that we were able to understand. He is extremely helpful and sensitive to our needs!

Evelyn was our tour guide. She was AMAZING! Very knowledgeable and polite. We had the best time ever. She took us to one of the oldest coffee shops which was the best coffee we have had. It was a truly excellent experience.

Everything was perfect! We had very limited time and so Evelyn made sure that we saw the highlights! We especially enjoyed our lunch of Pho and the coffee break. Mr T, our driver, kept us safe and got us back to the ship on time.

Tom was a great tour guide! Showed us everything we needed to see in one day and was very flexible considering our ship arrived very late.
