With a mix of cultural influences on the nation's cuisine, it's no wonder that Malaysian food is a lip-smackingly complex beast.
We'll meet in the old district of Chow Kit and Kampung Baru, one of the last remaining districts that is yet to be developed into glassy high rises.
Don't expect other foreigners. Stroll in this local neighbourhood of nightly street eats, sampling a variety of 15+ tastings, carefully curated for their culinary history.
The flavours change across the year, but highlights include the fragrant bowls of laksa, hand stretched rotis, nasi lemak with piquant sambal and herbal chicken rendang, charcoal-grilled mackerel, and soothing iced cendol with custard-like durian. We'll end with a fine view of the mighty Petronas Twin Towers.
I'm sure you have a lot of your plate, but here's some food for thought. While it's possible to attempt such a culinary marathon yourself, you'd be one sandwich short of a Malaysian picnic not to join me on our moveable food feast.

Had an awesome time meandering through the streets between stalls and shops. Ian and his sister/right-hand assistant Nadia (sp?) were amazing. Ian taught us about the food, culture, geography and traditions, while Nadia quietly managed our itinerary by moving ahead of us, helping to serve our dishes and informing Ian of next move/timing. We were encouraged to try lots of dishes, even Durian. (No plans to acquire the taste!) Ian offered to get more of any dish we wanted. Note, we experienced most of the delicious, well-portioned tastings while sitting in the comfort of restaurants and dining halls though some of the dishes may have come from street vendors. (We did have a dessert at a street vendor.) And we were not bombarded by the street vendors hawking their goods, which made for a very relaxed time to enjoy the walk, scenery and talk. Would do it again!

Great way to explore some off-the-tourist- path markets and food stalls. Lots of varieties of foods so definitely come with an appetite. Guide Stephen was lovely and patiently told us about the history and methods to the dishes we ate. Highly recommended!

We had a fantastic experience on the Sambal Street Food Tour! The tour took us through vibrant local markets, where we got to try an incredible variety of delicious and authentic dishes. Our guide, Tamil, was excellent—knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about the food and culture. He provided great insights into the ingredients and history behind each dish, making the experience even more enriching. The tour had a nice pace, allowing us to enjoy the food without feeling rushed while still covering a lot of ground. If you’re looking for a well-organized, flavorful, and informative street food experience, I highly recommend this tour!
