What To Expect
Royal Lochnagar Distillery
Royal Lochnagar distillery is situated just one mile from Balmoral Castle and sits at the foot of the Cairngorm mountains, fed by the crystal-clear water of the Scarnock springs. Originally called New Lochnagar, it was renamed following a royal visit from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1848. Today, the distillery combines the traditional pagoda kiln heads, and techniques like the open mash tun, with expert-led tours and tastings to help whisky lovers discover the story of Royal Lochnagar, its scenic setting and, most importantly, its beloved whisky.

5.00This is a fabulous distillery, beautiful buildings and grounds and friendly staff that make it a welcoming place. Dave our tour guide was very knowledgeable and relaxed - making the whole tour a lot of fun. Thank you - thoroughly recommend this day out.

5.00Did the Ticket Pass at Royal Lochnagar and honestly loved it. Our guide Annie was fantastic. She was incredibly detailed and knowledgeable, explaining everything from the distilling process to the flavour notes of each whisky in a way that actually made sense. Turns out she has a critical care background, so breaking down complex information clearly is very much her thing, and it really showed. They also have a great collection of scotch to explore, which makes it a perfect starting point if you're new to whisky and want to properly understand what you're drinking rather than just tasting blindly. Would absolutely recommend, and if you get Annie as your guide, you're in great hands!

5.0010 of us visited whilst on a long weekend in the Highlands. A walk round Balmoral first then a minute’s drive up to the distillery. Moira was a superb host, friendly, informative and fun. Interesting tour seeing both the process and learning the history. The staff also recommended another Whiskey in the shop based on my stated preferences which proved to be superb. Great fun, thank you.

5.00We did the Distillery tour with Stu. Even though they were in their annual repair period and not actually doing any distilling it was cool to see all the behind the scenes equipment. Stu was very informative and personable. My husband enjoyed the tasting and took home a bottle that he filled from the cask himself. Great experience!

5.00The staff were incredible. They squeezed us in when we missed the initial tour time so we could get the whole experience. Our guide, Tom, was informative and fun. He provided an excellent description on how to smell and taste the whiskey. The whiskey itself was incredible. So happy we stopped by.

5.00The Royal Lochnagar experience was wonderful. Dave was our guide and he was informative, insightful, funny, and helpful all at once. The history of Royal Lochnagar is something to be proud of and they provide a great view of it from their historical mini-museum in their retail building and talk about it extensively during the tour. The process is interesting and worth you investment, both in money and time. The product is delicious and I highly recommend to draw your own bottle from the cask if you are looking for a unique keepsake. We went during the week, midday and were literally the only ones on the tour. When taking the tour, make sure you take in the cask center of excellence they have established at Royal Lochnagar, it alone, is worth the price of admission! Imagine, you are walking the same grounds that literal royalty has trod upon for years!
