The Otsu-e Museum, located within the grounds of a traditional temple, is dedicated to Japan’s little-known Edo period folk art. Here you can explore the history of Otsu-e paintings, which began as Buddhist images and later evolved into humorous, satirical, and charming works that delighted travelers. The museum introduces the themes, stories, and cultural context of these distinctive paintings, providing a deeper understanding of why Otsu-e is often called Japan’s “hidden pop art.”

This is the last remaining workshop where the centuries-old techniques of Otsu-e are still preserved. Visitors can watch artisans continue the hand-painted traditions that once flourished along the Tōkaidō highway.
